When you hear the word you immediately think of two large Japanese wrestlers competing in their underwear. There’s another kind of Sumo though, one that’s also equally as big and round…and the underwear is optional! The Sumo Omni is a chair. Not just any chair. It’s an incredibly large bean bag chair with multiple uses and positions.
The Sumo Omni is 4 ˝ feet by 5 ˝ feet and weighs 18 lbs. The chair is stuffed full of specially designed Sumo Beads. The nice thing is, the chair stuffed but it’s not over stuffed. The designers left enough breathing room in the Omni that you can mold and shape it into numerous seating positions. You can see from this image that the positions resemble everything from using the Sumo Omni as a chair to using it like a bed!

http://www.evilavatar.com/images/reviews/sumo/sumo2.jpg

The Omni is covered with a heavy duty nylon material that won’t rip or tear and is spill/stain resistant. As a previous owner of numerous bean bag chairs, the #1 problem with them is always a rip. Once a bean bag rips the little foamy things start to poor out and it becomes useless. Such is not the case with the Sumo Omni, this sucker is resilient! The chair even withstood our new puppy’s digging ability with not so much as a scratch on the fabric.
At $149.99 the Sumo Omni is a bit expensive. If you are looking for a quick and dirty bean bag chair fix, this chair is not for you. However due to the quality of the material and a 2 years manufacturer's warranty I think the Sumo Omni is well worth the extra bucks.

http://www.evilavatar.com/images/reviews/sumo/sumo1.jpg

Conclusion

After a week or so of use I really love the Sumo Omni. I prefer the traditional bean bag approach to sitting in it, though I really like to use it chair style as well. The bag itself is plenty big enough for a big guy like me (6 feet tall with plenty of meat). The chair can easily be carried from room to room for regular use around the house. Overall I found this to be an excellent chair to use while gaming.

The Good:
- Huge
- Durable Nylon Material
- Easily shaped into numerous positions

The Bad:
- Kind of expensive

The Ugly:
- Neighbors wonder what's in the giant SUMO box on your doorstep

Score:
http://www.evilavatar.com/images/icons/e4_5.jpg
4.5 out of 5 Evil Eyes

Editor's Note: At the time of writing there is a special for the Red or Blue colored Omni's for only $129 with FREE shipping.

I was considering buying one of these previously but couldn't justify the expensive price tag without some sort of review from others. Now that I have the approval of bapenguin, I am now 75% sure I want one... 25% not because I already have several things ordered online and I hate waiting... =(

a Decent beanbag is expensive enough anyway, I would pay extra for an UBER bean bag - its a shame they dont ship to the uk

Hm, I'd be all over this if it weren't for that price. The furniture situation in my new place consists of my office chair, camping chair and my sleeping bag. The red and blue ones only cost 130 though. I wonder if they take paypal, I happen to have some extra money in my paypal that I could use to pick this up.

Wow that thing looks awesome. Id have to actually use it myself though before buying.

~Bapenguin, you might want to add that they have a special on the red or blue for $129.

I really think as long as the beans themselves stay fairly firm, this is the kind of beanbag chair you could have for 5+ years easy. I'm still amazed my dog didn't kill it when he went on his digging rampage.

~Bapenguin, you might want to add that they have a special on the red or blue for $129.

Good idea...I'll do that.

Way to go bap. Your said you have a reveiw soon and this is pretty damn soon. I was wondering about how well it would be for gaming. I'm about pretty I want to get one of those soon enough. For a good durable bean bag chair the price isn't too too bad.

You bastard - I bought my Omni for the 129 and free shipping (about a month and a half ago) deal when the colors available were Blue and Tangerine - then IMMEDIATELY AFTER they came out with Black and Silver as the colors, now they're onto Red and Blue.

I have yet to receive it - upon ordering it, they said it would be 7 to 10 days, but it took about a month and a half (and an inquiring e-mail) as to where it actually was, but 2 days ago, I got a FedEx shipping confirmation.

That being said, I need it! It can't get here soon enough.

My apartment is too small to warrant furniture that huge, unfortunately. I already have too much stuff. But if I was in the market for a ginormous bean bag, I would certainly consider the Sumo Omni.

On a side note, that's a cute little pup you've got there. He looks right at home in that mountain of bean bag. Huxley, wasn't it?

Yup...Huxley it is. He loves the Sumo...especially as soon as I get up...he runs and lays right down in my warm spot.

Yeah, I have one of these (bought it during the silver/black sale) and I'm a big fan. Anyone scared by the price; just check their site periodically for their occasional color-specific sales.

Looks pretty comfy and I must say I have not sat on a bean bag type chair in years... but I must quickly throw out the idea of buying it as I am low on the funds for a couple more months.

Thanks for this, I may just get one. :)

Although, you should review a Luv Sac (it is a big bean bag also that uses foam chunks rather then beads).

I would be interested in hearing someone compare a Luv Sac to one of these - I really like my luv sac and I am wondering if the sumo compares favorably with it. Of course the Luv Sac is much more expensive than the sumo - but that doesn't necessarily mean more comfort.

There seems to be a store pretty close to me (about an hour) away that sells the Luv Sac. Maybe I'll head down there and check them out.

:D

There are so many things I want to get right now. I am on a big saving spree for my vacation in October. If I were in the market for a nice chair, I would consider this.

Its actually Love Sac (http://www.lovesac.com/). Unless there is a Luv Sac. Or you were being sarcastic. The Love Sacs look freaking awesome though. Anyone wanna let me borrow $750 so I can get "The Big One"?

NO I just got the name wrong. :( I am not having the best of days, I even forgot to shave this morning and had to go back.

If it had a removable cover so I could wash it, I'd be interested. With the amount of spilled drinks in my house, that thing would stink like my balls in a matter of days.

How about that $750 for the confusion? You and anakin876 can split it since he got it wrong too. :D

Actually Love Sacs do have removable covers - and I got the second biggest one filled with some slightly different foam. It's pretty nice, but I hate fluffing the thing. It still cost me around 400 bucks too - so it's defnitely pricier than the sumo.

Maybe I should mention it in my review but the material is spill/stain resistant. You just wipe it off.

It seems like its stain resistant/proof and maybe made so no liquid can penetrate it? Im pretty sure that you wont ruin it by spilling something on it.

It has been said, they do have removable covers, but I think you can get them coated to protect against stains also. I think one material they use is spill resistant also.

They are actually pretty cool, I have seen them in store and once you get comfortable you don't want to get up.

The biggest problem I have is that I don't game reclined, I have to be sitting up or standing (especially for racing games)

Does anyone know if stores in the US sell either of these? I really wanna get one but I have to actually try it out for myself first considering the price.

~I missed the link on the Love Sac site. None anywhere near me though...

It's interesting that with a product as simple as a beanbag, sumo is still able to rip off a competitor by using the exact same big red label as the Fatboys have. But if they are also as good as Fatboys then I can only recommend them. Great to crash into after a long day.

$150 (130) for a beanbag? Stack of pillows and back problems for me please.

Funny Arnage... Maybe Sumo Lounge is a US front of the same company maybe. Or they really just STOLE it out right.

Nice review. It's a great idea to start looking at the other accoutrements of the Gaming Lifestyle. I'm currently in a pitched battle with my wife as to whose couch choice we should buy: the ugly as sin but ultra-plush and reclining (RECLINING!!!) one that I want, or the pretty to look at and as comfortable as a Suicide-sauce-enema one.

I often scan sites for reviews on furniture, but I'm always a little wary that I might be reading words from someone who doesn't game.....and is therefore highly suspect as resource.

I've been trying to do that, branch out our reviews to products like this and the Buttkickers, etc. This site is all about living and breathing games. So it's nice to know about products out there that enhance the experience.

Holy crap that's a huge beanbag. Where would you store it? It would take up your entire living room! I liken it to the scene in Akira where everyone's being absorbed by the big fleshy Tetsuo...that would be the beanbag chair in my house.

My cat would probably piss in it too. Damn cat.

in all of your worthiness penguin, I sent them a missive asking if the free shipping applied shipping to Alaska (as they did not have a notice that it did or did not apply) and have not got an answer, do you have a contact there that would be able to answer that question?

@bap- Did you check out Lovesac.com before you went with the sumo? i just bought the gamer sac from their website and when it arrives i can post my impressions. I sat in the ones they have at their retail stores and its like im in heaven lol. The also have a rocking type contraption to hold there "pillow sac" basically what you bought that turns it into a rocking chair you may want to check out.

Would order from Sumo but all they will send to Alaska is the bag itself without the filling. On top of that they will charge you the 160 dollar price (not the sale price) along with 30 dollars for shipping to Alaska. So an item that is listed on their website for 129 shipped would cost me twice that amount to get it to Alaska(as I would have to fill it with local filler costing 13-14 dollars for 3 cubic feet and it needs about 11 or so). Sheesh.

I am interested in the Sumo as that material they use looks good and doesn't have that 70's or 80's bag appeal. I have searched for others but nay.

Guess the box they ship it in is ginormous, hmmm. ah well, not about to pay that much for a bean bag chair but it would be nice :)

Just noticed you answered my questions Bap, they ship to Alaska but with the caveats above hehe.
