Last year Rockstar Games brought the Grand Theft Auto franchise back to the handheld gaming platform with Liberty City Stories for the PSP. The game was a huge success selling almost 2.5 million copies in North America and Europe. With the install base of around 7 million PSPs in these regions, 1 in every 3 PSP owners picked up a copy of LCS. With these kind of numbers Rockstar feels Vice City Stories can be one of the top selling games this holiday season. Vice City Stories for the PSP will be a completely new game from the ground up with over 100 licensed music tracks and a city twice the size of that in Liberty City Stories.

Graphically Vice City Stories is one of the most impressive titles to date on the PSP. The graphics easily equal that of a PS2 game with over twice the draw distance and twice the amount of polygons than there were in LCS. Rounding out the list of new features are water based vehicles including Jet-skis and boats as well as flying vehicles like Helicopters. There was a certain GTA-inspired Xbox 360 title that was “unable to implement flying” because of the lack of a standard hard drive. Yet somehow Rockstar managed to create flying in a handheld version of a game based on a UMD disc with almost no loading. Impressive to say the least.

Vice City Stories takes place 2 years prior to the PS2 version of Vice City. You play the role of Vic Vance, a 28 year old soldier preparing to ship out to Guantanamo Bay. Vic is thrust into a world of rival drug lords and gangs as a personal tragedy changes his life.

Vice City Stories tries to break away from some of the traditional GTA style missions. For instance the one mission I saw you get hired to be a stunt double for a movie. The mission starts out on a jet ski, and your job is to weave in and out of checkpoints and jump the jet ski over some jumps. The whole time this is happening a helicopter with a film crew follows you and as you complete tricks a cinematic camera angle shows it off in slow motion. Suddenly you hit a jump, fly out of the water and land on the ground next to a motorcycle. You hop on the bike and start weaving in and out of the city streets. The whole time the helicopter is still following you, but now a truck based film crew has joined the party. It’s a pretty unique non-violent mission and much better than your traditional delivery style missions or go here kill this target mission.

Another mission had you flying a helicopter with your brother hanging out the back. Your job was to keep the helicopter steady while flying over a group of bikers as your brother takes them out. You continue on the mission going up and down buildings as your brother takes out members of the biker gang. Suddenly your helicopter gets shot down, your brother bails out and you must make your way back into the heart of the biker territory to get your brother back. In another mission you play the role of recon as you watch a drug deal go bad with binoculars and have to chase down a drug dealer on a boat in your car, climaxed with a jump onto a boat with the car.

Vice City Stories is shaping up to be a very impressive PSP title. On top of single player game that should be about twice as long as Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories will feature Wi-Fi multiplayer with at least 6 different gaming modes and mini-games. Look for VCS to hit stores October 31st exclusively for the Playstation Portable.
