One day a man visited his friend in the country, and they sat outside on the porch as the sun dipped low, sipping sweet tea, and the man had an old hound dog who laid out there with them. And as the two chatted, every so often the hound dog would pick his head up, cry out whimpering pain, then put his head back down.

After this happened a third time, the visitor says to the man, "Your hound sounds like he's in pain, what's going on?"

And the man said, "Well, he's laying on a nail head sticking up out of the floor, and it hurts him."

"Well, why doesn't he move?"

"Because it doesn't hurt bad enough."

Too often, in games, in politics, and so many other spheres where only coordinated mass action could cause change, we act collectively like that old hound dog, yelling every once in awhile but not moving.
