METAL JESUS ROCKS!: Cab Ride

Even though you wouldn't know it by walking into one today, arcades used to be so much more than a mostly empty room with 5 variations of Stacker and a broken Big Buck Hunter. During the greatest decade, the local video arcade was a glorious bastion of dim lighting, blinking video screens, and blaring music: sensory overload in all the right ways. It was a simpler time when losing one of your lives in a game actually meant something because it was literally costing you 1/3 of your quarter. So you either got good and kept playing, or you ran out of tokens and could only stand and watch someone who was either a better player or had richer parents. (Stupid coin-devouring Gauntlet.)

Many of us who lived through the golden age still long to re-capture those happy times. And now, thanks to the twin miracles of emulation and craigslist, we can bring a radical slice of that 80s arcade awesomeness into our own home for not alot of money. Of course it helps if, like the Metal Jesus, you have a burly tool buddy who can help out with some of the more hazardous aspects of taking a broken-down mass of eletronics and particle board and re-building it into a monument of retrogaming greatness.

Place your quarter up on the marquee if you want next, because Drunken Master Paul is about to take the top spot on the Manly Geek scoreboard in this week's episode of METAL JESUS ROCKS! :

While nothing will ever be able to fully re-create the experience of going into a Gold Mine circa 1983, you can still get pretty close with a MAME cab, a dark room, a blacklight, and a Styxx album turned up loud in the background.

I remeber those days, skiping class to head down the the local arcade to have just one more go on Ghost n Goblins, I still love that game. And the decade thing well....as far as games and tech then yeah, its the best. Muisic has to go to the 70's tho...Zeplin, Sabbath... need i say more.

Always wanted an arcade cabinet, something like pacman or donkey kong. I do miss arcades, there aren't really any dedicated arcades left in my city unless you count Chuckie cheese or Dave n Busters.

Check craigslist regularly (or better yet, if you have a smartphone, download one of the craigslist apps and set up an alert for "arcade -xbox"). You can sometimes get lucky and find a listing for a game you want at less than $100. Case in point, I picked up a working Speed Buggy cabinet for $30 and snagged a Konami 12-in-1 for free. Glorious! :)

Nice finds.

If I had my choice, like I could really pick, I'd love the TMNT 4 Turtles in Time (full 4 player cabinet), the X-Men Arcade (full 6 player cabinet) and both Dungeons and Dragons games. I pumped sooooo many quarters into both during my childhood and teenage years when there were still arcades around.

I could easily name dozens of others I'd love to have but I think if I had to nail it down to a tiny list it'd be one of those above.

Wow! That is a thing of beauty!

I know some people are able to collect multiple arcade cabs for their man cave. However my wife knows me...and basically said "you get one, so make it count". I certainly did!

Also... fans of the 80s pop culture, arcades and video games MUST... I repeat: MUST either read or listen to the audio book: http://www.readyplayerone.com/

I'm going through my 2nd read of it, and it's just so damn fantastic. I can't recommend it enough.

I like how Paul got his own episode. That was refreshing and great subject matter!

Originally some of my viewers were kinda so-so on Paul and his wacky personality when I first had him on the show. I think they thought he was fake...

...but now a lot of people are beginning to appreciate him as much as I do. The guy is hilarious to be around, and completely random. There's a reason why the Food Network was **this close** to giving him his own TV show!

Holy shit what did he audition for? I always thought he looked familiar in a weird way.

Paul was on several seasons of Ace of Cakes and he has done several of their stand alone Cake Challenges. Later, he tried to setup either another cooking show or a mix of car, food & travelling show...but it never panned out.

...so now, he guest stars on my humble YouTube channel :)

Being a pastry chef is considered the most difficult and highly skilled of the cooking profession. I have newfound respect for the company you keep.

Hmmm speaking of which, if he started to specialize in video game themes that might make for some very interesting material. Has he ever considered doing icade styled cakes in different themes?

Imagine a miniature pinball themed cake with truffled fondant balls and a older Driod phone set up to display dot matrix high scores!

That H.R. Giger cake is pretty epic. Wish I could have had it as the groom cake at my wedding. Would have been fun to freak out some of my less sci-fi inclined relatives. :)
