Text Highlighting

Technical question here. How can I stop my browser from auto-highlighting text in the forum message (post) box as I am typing? Somehow this got 'enabled' just on this site and it is driving me bonkers, lol. Everything is highlighted (selected) as I type.

No idea why this is happening. Looked online for help, can't find any. Suggestions?

Check your accessibility options to see if you accidentally turned something on.

Not it, but thanks for the idea!

It's so bizarre; when I click to quote and reply to you, your quote is 'selected' as is the lower third of the text box. Then, as I type, my words are 'selected' as well.

LOL. I don't know WTF setting I somehow triggered, but it's amazingly annoying, and I've only noticed it here, on this site.

Almost sounds like a stuck keyboard or mouse key. If it is just here, I don’t know though.

Is Sticky keys enabled? If you hit shift several times quickly in Windows it will enable itself.

Not sticky keys. Could be a stuck key, except that I haven't seen this happening anywhere else in my browser usage.

Just bizarre. As I'm typing, it's all 'grey/selected' as if I dragged across the text to select it all.

Crazy weird. No clue what's going on.

I’m guessing you rebooted and all that? Have you tried a different keyboard? I’m sure you must have at least one extra floating around. Even on a laptop you can plug in a USB keyboard or sync a Bluetooth and disable to onboard to check out a hardware failure.

That also happens when you have the browser search page function enabled. Is there a search box present?

(ctrl+f)

Try resetting your browser settings to default.

Yeah it sounds like some sort of "search as you type" feature is enabled.

Terran 10-22-2018 03:30 PM

Reset settings, didn't work. I think I'll throw the computer away. ;)

No idea what's causing it. It's a mystery! :shrugs:

Terran 10-27-2018 01:13 PM

Still doing it, even now as I typed this reply (it's all gray/selected). Pissing me off. Driving me nuts. Becoming an alcoholic here! ;)

What browser are you using and what version of it? Check what addons are running, clear your cache/cookies, and see if that works.

Dude

I am getting the same fucking thing now when I type in to Outlook.com email. No other website, just Outlook.

I know they just came out of beta with something so I am sure it is not the same problem but I can see how annoying it is.

Terran 10-27-2018 03:22 PM

Not Narrator. This is, I believe, Opera-specific at this point for me, and ONLY on this site. Doesn't happen in IE here, and doesn't happen in Opera anywhere else.

I triggered something, and now it's triggering me!!!! :D

Hagetaka 10-27-2018 06:34 PM

Using Opera? Yuck.

Go to Settings > Browser > Advanced > System

Change "Use hardware acceleration when available" to OFF then relaunch.

SUCCESS! Thank you! Why in heaven's name would hardware acceleration have led to a text-selecting effect? So strange...

Usually related to drivers for your video card. Get a new one lately? Or update Opera? Some sort of versioning incompatibility most likely.

Terran 10-27-2018 08:29 PM

Recent driver update. That explains it.

Thank you greatly!
