HTC Announces Higher-Resolution Vive And Wireless Adapter
 

HTC has announced the Vive Pro. Game Informer has the story.

HTC today announced exciting new changes to the Vive, emphasizing both higher resolution and a wireless adapter.

The new headset, named the Vive Pro, boosts the resolution beyond the realm of existing VR headsets. upping the OLED displays to 2880 x 1600, which works out to 1400 x 1600 per eye and 615 pixels per inch. As a comparison to the other product where ppi is often mentioned, an iPhone X contains about 326 ppi on its screen, but the iPhone also isn't right on top of your eye. The new Vive resolution is a 78 percent increase from the 2160 x 1200 resolution of the current market's Vive.

The Vive Pro has also reformed the top headband for comfort, added a sizing dial for adjustments, integrated on-ear headphones built into the headset, and added dual-microphones and cameras to increase the capabilities inherited from the previous headset.

In addition, HTC has announced a wireless adapter to make the Vive wire-free and severely reduce risk of tripping over the cords. The adapter uses Intel's WiGig technology, which is explicitly designed to reduce latency and eliminate interference. The intention is to make a wireless headset unable to be discerned from a normal HDMI connection. The adapter will work for the existing Vive headset as well as the Vive Pro.

Pretty excited for this. Since I bought a house and now have adequate room for a Vive, this should be a good time to pick it up. What are we thinking for price? $1000? $1500?

The most interesting thing here is that you can now wirelessly connect a (very) high res screen to the tv. I thought that kind of bandwidth would be impossible without wires.

Hopefully TV's start supporting this real soon and we can all get rid of the rats nest of cables in the living room.

Despite being quite excited for this tech (I spent a little time at Valve hanging out in the lab when they were dreaming this stuff up), I decided against being an early-adopter and waiting for the 2nd or 3rd generation of hardware before entering the market. If the price point is right, this might be where I jump in. Either way, as others have mentioned, I'm just happy to see things progressing in general.

I'm going to go out on a limb: $800 I believe is what my original Vive cost at launch. I think this is what the new one will cost (sans wireless), but with the new lighthouses and new controllers. Old vive will drop to $399. Wireless mod will be $299.

There are many. Most are still designed around playing them in short bursts, but there is plenty of content out there that is good to great.

To me, VR is about the experience. So far, I haven't seen a single game that was made "better" by VR, but there are a lot of titles that wouldn't even be considered games without VR. On PS4, "The Playroom VR" is a fantastic example of what VR can do. Despite the low resolution of the PSVR headset, the visuals are amazing, there's a myriad of great little ideas, and the whole thing is absolutely free!

I imported a PSVR/GTS bundle when it was USD 199.- on Amazon.com. Even with customs and handling fees, that came out at about half of what the same pack costs in Germany right now. Ever since then, The Playroom has been at the center of everyone's attention wherever I took my PS4.

Note 1: Personally, I'm really really really hoping for "Ace Combat 7" to be my go-to VR game.

Note 2: Driving a regular car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in "Gran Turismo Sport" feels so cool, it almost validates the bundle by itself.

I just bought the Vive through Amazon (with GC and Pro headphones) and didn't like it because I don't have a big enough room.

However, that didn't convince me to return it. Today's news of Vive PRO is what convinced me to return it to Amazon... I figured, if they accept the return, I'd rather buy the newer version, even if I end up paying twice as much.

I still love my Rift, though. Robo Recall is tons of fun. Arizona Sunshine is ok. Eve Valkyrie is a hell of a lot of fun, until it makes me extremely nauseous. Anyone else experience "VR sickness"?

This is the step I've been looking for and, depending on price might be a day one for me. I boxed up my Rift due to my dissatisfaction with the resolution and the so-so experiences, ports (like Elite: Dangerous), and having all my damn USB and HDMI ports taken up.

That said we're still missing THE killer app IMO but wireless and getting much higher fidelity is a significant step. They also need to do a better job of venting around the headset. The fogging issue was pretty bad for some people.

Unlike most other people I know, I'm pretty much immune to VR sickness in most games. What gets me, though, is strong de- or acceleration movement without a frame of reference, like braking in a racing game without a cockpit view, or smashing through a wall in "SuperHyperCube" (when the wall fills your field of view). This is one of the things that impresses me most about the PlayStation headset: It not only fits glasses perfectly (unlike the competitors), I actually prefer using it with glasses on, because this completely prevents fogging for me.

Edit: On topic of this new Vive, though: While all those technological advancements are neat (and ultimately very much needed), I'm still convinced the major hurdles stay the same as before - pricing (for customers) and install base (for developers). You won't see a real killer application (VR porn doesn't count as long as all official download stores are curated) for an install base of... what? 2 million PSVR? And maybe half that number for Vive and Rift combined? As long as a peripheral costs more than the console/PC needed to use it, this won't change. The USD-199 sales stunt by SCEA was a good start, and I hope they'll follow up on this. Don't get me started on the HoloLens...

I expect You To Die And Ultrawings are both exceptional.

I Expect You You To Die is like a one scree point and click adventure game (like Gobliiins) but instead of pointing and clicking you use your VR hands to pick up and manipulate things. The big draw is that every puzzle has multiple solutions that are all completely intuitive. For example, if you get spotted by an enemy while posing as a window washer, picking up a gun, turning around and shooting the guy will get him off your back. Or picking up a squeegie and sponge and pretending to wash the windows. Whichever thing pops into your head first.

Ultrawings is pilotwings For the Snes... but in VR. You pilot a series of real-world planes through challenge courses. But all buttons levers and dials are manipulated with your VR hands. Great fun.

Why did HTC make this otherwise killer looking device absolute shit by building in *closed* headphones.....?

Seriously?

For free it is an auto pass. Without those piece of shit cans, I would seriously consider picking it up under $1K.
