Every Half-Life Game Is Free To Play Right Now

Quote:

If you've wanted to catch up on the Half-Life series in time for Half-Life: Alyx (and haven't picked the games up during a Steam sale), then Valve has an awesome offer for you. You can play the entire series for free on Steam until April 1. That gives you plenty of time to fill yourself in on the story before Half-Life: Alyx's release date, which is slated for sometime in March.

The games included in the free-play promotion include Half-Life, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life: Source, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, and Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
GameSpot.

Given the age of the games, and stagnation of the franchise, go out on a limb and offer them for free (to keep) for anyone interested until April 1. Plenty of others have. It's nostalgia at this point. Do they really think someone is going to play these for the first time, now, and say, "I need to pay money for this."?

We'll, the series is dead as far as I'm concerned. They must know it, too.

The only people clamoring for a 3 are dwindling fast.

Does anyone even care about this story anymore?

I do. Well, part of me does. No. Did. They squandered anything I had left in the tank by going VR, and by going Half-Life Alyx.

I was pretty fanatical about the series for a long time. I'd say 99% of that is dead and gone, and now the series is just a fond memory of my youth.

I likely won't play Alyx, and I'm okay with the series going to pasture.

I know that not everyone feels this way, but this is one of the biggest bummers for me in the history of my favorite hobby. It's dead and gone, and it's time for everyone to move on.

Too bad. Countless hours spent. Both games a cornerstone experience in my hobby.

I have a mixed reality set which has sat in its box since buying. Maybe, just maybe, this might give me a reason to open it. (Darn random purchasing habits).

41.84?

Nah. I'll wait for it to hit 15 before buying.

I would have been excited about a Half Life 3 but the last thing I want in gaming is for a dev to force out a sequel that they obviously don't want to make and have no really good ideas for.

Ghostblaze 01-23-2020 04:40 PM

Cheap greedy fucks couldn't give it out for free? Wow.

Sensei-X 01-23-2020 07:34 PM

***SPOILER ALERT***

You can safely avoid playing Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, and Half-Life 2: Episode Two. HL2 leaves you right where you started and EP2 ends in a cliffhanger that will probably never get resolved.

No sale. HL is a dead franchise and Alyx is the final nail in the coffin. Even if it sells great, that doesn't mean shit for a VR title on the PC. 200k units is stellar for VR but that isn't the kind of low amount of $, even if every copy sold a Valve index, that is going to move any needles for Valve.

No. And the mix of platforming with a shooter is annoying as fuck-all as well. Never liked that. Stupid genre mashup, period.

Overrated series. It's dead. Bye.

Antique gaming , is it a thing yet?

My millennial co worker didn't even know WTF halflife is. He somewhat knew about it when mentioning it's about a sci-fi guy who runs around with a crowbar. Irrelevant.

Your millennial co-worker must have lived under a rock or never really gamed. As a millennial myself, I can know all about Half-life. I find it hysterical that people shit on it now. Mostly because everyone is salty(including myself) that Valve hasn't done shit with the series after episode two. When the games were out, everyone praised and played them and were salivating for half-life 2. Shit I still have The orange box on my shelf. It will always be iconic.

As a 35-year-old Millennial, I played the shit out of Half-Life (mostly for the mods).

I'm in the rare percentage that shat on it then too, one of the most overrated IP's in the history of the industry, as is Valve themselves.

That's fine. To each their own. Myself and all my friends loved it.

Oh for sure, lots liked HL, personally I never found it that great an FPS, zero narrative, decent physics for it's time with HL2. Never really understood why people found it so amazing or anything.
