Vive Unveils New Wireless, Standalone VR Headset

As revealed today at the Google I/O conference, Google has announced a new Vive headset that uses Daydream, Google's VR platform that launched last year. It's a standalone headset, meaning you don't have to connect it to a PC or any other device, which comes with the added benefit of being wireless.

"Everything you need for the best portable VR is built right into the headset," a post on the Vive blog explains. It adds, "Vive's standalone VR headset will provide a deeper and more immersive portable VR experience than ever before."

The headset uses WorldSense, which Google says allows for "precise movement tracking. Lean, dodge, and duck as you wish."

Details are still light, with more to be announced "soon." The blog post claims, "[R]est assured, it will be simple, easy-to-use and with no cables to connect. Just pick it up, put it on and be fully immersed in your new reality."

This could be a winner but having seen Samsung struggle for years with their GearVR I don't have a lot of hope. At least Samsung could share some Oculus content and the most recent headset was actually pretty nice and the phone was light so not terribly uncomfortable.

Vive will start quite a way behind Oculus/Samsung in this market but Samsung's reliance on the phone is a pretty major downside and is a big gating factor for quality mobile VR for most people.

I love it just to watch movies on airplane flights. It's awesome for that.

That is what I want to know. I have been enjoying the PSVR here and there and was waiting for a second generation VR headset, but could see myself joining this generation for a comfortable wireless headset that works with the PC and also supports roomscale/controllers.

Meh, I wouldn't compare this to GearVR. This has a built-in computer.

If it has 'everything' and is wireless, how much must the bastard weigh? I like vr games on my gaming PC with an oculus, but I can't imagine have sufficient horsepower without a ridiculous price point

This man gets it. This is literally the only reason why I wish I went with Oculus/Rift instead of PSVR. But I game on the PC for its fidelity, and first generation VR is just not there yet.

Define computer. GearVR is also powered by a computer and a damned powerful one at that in case you haven't looked at the Galaxy 8 specs.

This is likely going to have some version of android and some version of mobile quality hardware on it which puts it squarely in GearVR territory. Sure the package of Phone+GearVR might be more expensive but you're gunna get the phone anyway and the headset (right now) is free!

What might be a real game changer would be if it were running a tegra chip and some real power under the hood but power would be an issue which renders the wireless part difficult since you'd be changing batteries every hour.

What I think we're looking at here is OYUA in a VR Headset.

If this is streaming from a PC from Steamlink or some such I am not sure that's a great market to try and get in to and it specifically says "No PC".

Yeah, if it's going to be just mobike-quality (makes sense now that I think about it) then it's not really a replacement for Vive 1, is it?

Also, it would mean that GearVR must be doing something right for HTC to copy the platform, so to speak.

Just because it's standalone doesn't mean that they've packed everything into the headset. I guess they could alleviate the size and weight of the headset by running a cable down to a box that you clip on your belt. Like what you need when you have a wireless lapel microphone. Having the bulk down there could give them some more freedom to use bigger batteries and larger hardware.

Good thinking. I guess anything is on the table right now. Either way, I'm excited to learn more. I was getting nervous VR would kind of just go away for awhile.

This announcement sounds weird. What does "stand-alone" mean in this regard? "No phone"? "No PC"? This basically either means "no processing power", "not true VR" or "prohibitively expensive".

And when current, somewhat open VR platforms struggle with getting publishers/developers to invest in/produce high-quality content, what chance does a specialized device (with a supposedly closed marketplace - else you could just use a phone) stand to see significant 3rd-party support?

Next question! Who the fuck is "Vive?" I thought the Vive was an HTC product in partnership with Valve. Have they dropped this branding to focus on the Vive name?

This uses Google Daydream, a Phone VR experience, so it is basically a GearVR with the phone built in. As such, you will be paying for a headset and phone (~800). And as such you will get the quality of a headset and phone vs a dedicated PC. My guess is it will be some variation of the Pixel.

Or you can wait and get a Daydream compatible phone (you are not limited to just a single brand) and an $80 headset and get the same thing. Only with a phone.

What would be cool is to use a 360 degree camera where you call someone on this and have it so it is like you are sitting there with them.
