EA Caves in and Changes Star Wars Battlefront II Character Costs

PC Gamer has the news that after a massive backlash, Electronic Arts has decided to reduce the number of credits required to unlock hero characters in Star Wars Battlefront II by 75%.

In response to the massive backlash against the cost of hero characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in Star Wars Battlefront 2—this EA reply to complaints on Reddit has earned 450,000 downvotes in just one day, making it the most-downvoted Reddit post of all time—Electronic Arts has announced that the amount of credits required to unlock the "top heroes" will be reduced by 75 percent.

"Making games great comes from regular tuning. As one example, today we’re making a substantial change based on what we’ve seen during the Play First trial," executive producer John Wasilczyk wrote. "There’s been a lot of discussion around the amount of in-game credits (and time) it takes to unlock some of our heroes, especially Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning. We used data from the beta to help set those levels, but it’s clear that more changes were needed."

The reduction means that Luke and Darth, for instance, will cost 15,000 credits instead of the previously-announced 60,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbecca, and Princess Leia will go for 10,000; and Iden Versio, the star of the Battlefront 2 campaign, will be 5000.

Screw EA and their predatory pricing schemes. You can take Battlefront 2 and shove it up your collective asses.

I'm wondering how much damage this will repair; people are really pissed off about this game.

This is good news. I'm a few hours into my 10 hour trial (w/ Origin Access). After playing the first three SP campaign missions (all that is in the trial, sadly) I jumped into MP. I've probably got about 3 hours in at this point, and I have ~12K credits. That means it's about 4 hours of play to unlock the two highest tier heroes and ~20 hours of play to unlock all 6 heroes. YMMV.

That's a much better arrangement than before, especially since the game is geared to get you to spend your in-game credits on loot crates. I wouldn't ever spend real money on a crate, but they do have some game-impacting stuff in them. Every basic ability in the game gets a buff from cards you find in crates (and in many cases, it's a straight up buff with no penalty). Since a basic crate costs ~2.5K you can grab crates at a steady clip.

Overall, this is a very good change, IMHO. All the heroes are unlocked in Arcade mode (kind of an offline co-op mode). Since you can test drive them as much as you want you can just buy the ones you really like and go right into crates. I don't have any problem with a random lottery loot system provided that it's part of the game's normal progression.

How many credits do you get per match if you do decent and win?

F*ck me harder, EA!

With lube it's an extra 29.99. Add an additional 15 for a reach around.

This may or may not be true (probably true, though) since nobody except fancy pants pre-release reviewers have seen the whole campaign yet, but it seems like this credit bonus is intended for the player to unlock the campaign's protagonist, Iden Versio, for multiplayer play. Since she just dropped from 20K to 5K, this change makes sense.

Just not gonna buy it. Fuck EA.

The idiots who pony up the money are the real problem. Don't buy this shit!

Bullshit, if people want to buy it they are can. To blame consumers is a joke. It's a game and the vitriol is out of control.

It's also shouldn't be a surprise that EA are greedy bastards, they make a killing on the Ultimate Team stuff and believe in this model. That is the most P2W model ever.

EA has removed the refund button from their customer portal. Hoping people will just give up canceling because of the 60+ minute wait time to live chat support

So now in 2 days time everyone will be running around as Darth Vader. GREAT JOB GAMERS! Leave the game design to the professionals please.

This is such a dumbshit argument. You don't need "Game Design" on your CV to know that their original implementation was a bad idea, or that their "fix" is essentially a slap in the face.

By your logic, no one should have complained about Diablo 3's RMAH; they should have "left game design to the professional".

People wanted to unlock Vader quicker, now it should be relatively easy to get him in the first few hours of gameplay. How is that a slap in the face?

Also, while I have not played SWBF myself yet, I do believe the Hero mechanic works in a way so that you don't START with a character, you need to earn it during the match, and you can only have ONE of each hero at a time. So it's impossible to even have TWO Darth Vaders on the same match at the same time anyway.

They diminished the number of credits you receive along with the 75% reduction in cost. It's kind of a shitty "fix" that doesn't really do much to help anything.

While there is a "heroes only" mode, you're right; the way heroes work in-game is essentially the same as it was with the previous game. This is also pretty irrelevant.
