Rumor: Gearbox To Reboot Duke Nukem

Quote:

Gearbox is reportedly set to reboot Duke Nukem after development on Aliens: Colonial Marines ends, according to the same OXM rumour wrap that cited Fable IV for a 2013 release this morning. The reboot will come with Duke Begins, the project that Gearbox was working on before taking over development on Forever after being in dev hell for 15 years. After announcing it took over development on DNF, the Texan developer said it had became the rights holders of the IP.

Surprise surprise. I recall saying this when they bought the name. They pushed out Forever, took what they could from it to try and get some money back from the purchase of the rights, and then will make their own game. Nothing unexpected here.

Orphiuchus 08-22-2011 11:12 AM

Well, despite my hatred of many of their design choices, Gearbox does have a lot of talent. I look forward to seeing what kind of duke game they can make from scratch(complete with forced 4:3 FOV and a 2 weapon system).

randir14 08-22-2011 11:19 AM

I kind of expected this. They didn't buy the IP just to release someone else's game, and back in October Randy was asked about Duke Begins, to which he replied "I cant talk about that right now."

Please no. Just, no.

This is still gonna be aids.

Congratulations to all those who bought the dreck that is DNF. You funded their next title by tossing your money in the toilet, and I mean that very nearly literally. Too bad you don't actually get the next title for your money!

Ozymandis 08-22-2011 11:45 AM

My only thought is- why?

Sloth 08-22-2011 12:03 PM

I have to ask the same question. Why? I like the character Duke Nukem, but it wasn't the game itself that was panned, it was the humor and character. I'm sure GBX will point out initial sales, but looking forward I don't see them moving as many units of a new duke nukem game now that people know what to expect. Let's face it, most of those early purchases were people buying the name. And that name now does not hold the same kind of revenue generating power.

Bad decision by gearbox to fight this uphill battle convincing gamers that we should still care about Duke Nukem anymore.

What he said. After Duke Nukem Forever, I have no faith in Gearbox.

viewtifulmom 08-22-2011 12:06 PM

Oh boy here we go more "shoddy journalism"

Reckless Aband0n 08-22-2011 12:14 PM

^ I kind of felt that way as well after Redboxing DNF. Their decision to attach their name to such a broken (and pretty much already finished) product was questionable at best. Quick and dirty $, anyone?.

SaintBlitzkrieg 08-22-2011 12:14 PM

DNF wasn't even Gearbox.

They got the rights and pushed out what they had a few months later. There was nothing they could do about it.

I would hold judgment till they release another Duke game. If that game sucks, then so be it. But to hold DNF over their heads like they were the brain child of it, thats just dumb.

Gearbox has good games under it, Brother in Arms, Borderlands, Half-Life. Id reserve your judgment.

That happens to me sometimes when I eat a really spicy burrito.

Technically, Gearbox only made "Opposing Force", an average quality expansion pack for Half-Life.

FOCUS:

It's time to go back to the kind of Duke Nukem that jumps around in 2D, collects powerups, has a "nuclear pistol" and a "can-do attitude".

Obviously, that's meant only with regards to the Half-Life portion of their endeavors, I'm not trying to dispute that they made Borderlands or Brothers in Arms.

There was nothing wrong with the character or the humour and the opening level was good stuff, I love wandering around a place that is mine and seeing detailed touches and references.

It was the gameplay that was the problem. During the underwater level in particular, a good underwater level has NEVER been done but the only difference there and on land is that you move like you're walking but incredibly fucking slow. Your weapons work the same, enemies work the same, you just have an annoying breathing limit and move VERY, VERY fucking slowly.

Radiozo 08-22-2011 01:08 PM

The release date is set for 2024

Only true if it was in the hands of 3D Realms and George Broussard

To be fair, just Opposing Force. Still a fantastic game in its own right, and by far the best expansion pack ever, but they had nothing to do with the quality of the original Half Life(or followups).
