Darkest Dungeon's Next DLC Expansion is the Farm-Themed 'The Color of Madness'

More Darkest Dungeon is a good thing. Eurogamer has the story.

Quote:

Developer Red Hook has announced The Color of Madness, the latest paid DLC expansion for its superb Lovecraftian stress box, Darkest Dungeon.

The Color of Madness will be the third paid expansion for Red Hook's visually striking, relentlessly punishing turn-based RPG, following on from The Crimson Court and the more recent, smaller-scale Shieldbreaker DLC.

"Some hateful shard of alien origin has streaked through the night sky, crashing into the old Miller's farm on the outskirts of the Hamlet!", says Red Hook, "Those unfortunate enough to witness the Comet's arrival have been blinded by what they can only describe as a shifting, ephemeral hue of damnably abrasive intensity. There has been no word from the farm in a fortnight, save for the unearthly groaning that echoes from the ruin of the mill..."

The game is available on Steam, GOG, PS4, PS Vita and it's coming soon to Nintendo Switch.

Seems to be universally loved. I need to check it out.

This game is so damn hard.

This is the first game where I got to the final stage and just figured, "Fuck it, I'm not even gonna do this". I knew my favorite heroes would die in the attempt and I would be forced to level up new ones for consecutive goes, so I just left my badass crew alive and quit out. Absolutely love this game on every level, but it is luck-dependant grinding at the very end. Would love to do the DLCs but I doubt I'll get back to it. Very weird, one of my favorite games of recent times, but I just disagree on a fundamental level with the ending, highly original as it is. Still applaud the developer for coming up with something so dreadfully quaint.

I would argue that it's incredibly luck dependent throughout, and especially at the beginning when your heroes suck.

The RNG is strong in this one for sure, and yeah, you'll lose a lot of guys in the beginning, when they don't yet mean that much. I guess you gain some control over the chaos as the game progresses, for it to return full circle at the end, with a big time sink attached to it.

Haven't played this game...so you can lose people in your party to permadeath? Or is that your own death that is permanent? Or both?

I get very turned off by games that have too harsh a death penalty. It happens to be my only complaint about PoE. The -xp death penalty is very painful. I've gone back to zero on several occasions in boss fights. Love the game, hate the penalty.

Its pretty much unavoidable to lose singular heroes throughout the game, even an entire party of them - if all goes to hell. You'll have a pretty fleshed out roster to choose from eventually and the way they all get unqiue quirks before long is cool. I'd certainly reccommend it to be checked out, but its not everyone's cup of tea. If you can dig X-Com (or Final Fantasy Tactics), you got a pretty high percentage chance of digging this. Might even crit you right in the love-root. YouTuber Baer did a longplay chronicle of the entire game, 200+ episodes. I watched about 20 of'em and decided to buy.
