PS5 To Launch In 2019 And Will Be "Another Half Step," Says Pachter

GameSpot has the story.

Quote:

Sony may have only released the PlayStation 4 Pro at the end of last year, but more hardware could come as soon as 2019, according to one analyst. Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter has told GamingBolt that he expects the PlayStation 5 to launch in 2019, and that it will be a "half step," similar to how, in Pachter's view, the PS4 Pro was a "half step" over the base PS4.

"The PS4 Pro is better [from a technical perspective] than the PS4, so I think that's a half step towards the PS5," he said. "I think the PS5 will be another half step."

He added: "My expectation that is that it's not coming out in 2018. That [it will be] 2019 or 2020 but probably 2019. Sony is probably timing it better because they are going to bring out a 4K-capable device when the 4K TV market reaches 50% in the USA and 35% in the rest of the world.

"I think Sony has probably got the next console cycle nailed down already. I think they already know what they got to do."

I hope that the window in the above image is UV protected. I would consider it a crime against humanity if harm were to come to that DEVO hat! I don't want to be forced to send in the Goon Squad.

Has he ever been right?

At first, I thought he worked for Sony, and I shook my head. If console cycles go from ~5-7 years to ~2-3 years, I'm walking away and sticking with PC exclusively. It's already too much for me with PSPro and OneX.

However, since he's just some anal-yst, I'll just ignore him.

Pachter has been getting rich making terrible predictions about the gaming industry for at least a decade

Eh... or how about they just let game devs squeeze all the power out of the PS4 Pro for a few more years... Most people still don't have 4k HDTVs

"got to do" is such an ugly, ugly phrase.

Equipment 4k and certainly HDR, which is a core pillar of the next generation of visuals, aren't on the radar for most consumers till at least 2020. A vast number of Americans were forced to upgrade to "HD" not long ago for crying out loud!

The biggest upgrade Sony could do is allow the PS4/Pro to play 4k movies. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software limitation however I suspect it's something they can turn on. Each piece in the electronics chain (TV, player, Audio system if it's there, etc) has to be compliant with the right HDMI standard and Sony didn't want to force or assume that just yet.

Microsoft some how manages to detect. Not sure why Sony doesn't. Or maybe it is a hardware oversight.

Ben Heck's tear down of the Pro revealed the same drive as the one currently in the base PS4. So hardware limitation I am guessing.

While this is fairly accurate...he's probably not wrong this time. Sony and Microsoft have both made moves towards abandoning the "standard" 5-7 year console cycle; the Pro and X are essentially designed to buck this trend and release new hardware at a much, much faster rate. Microsoft is positioning themselves to be far superior as we speak, thanks entirely to the unified platform they're pushing. Sony, on the other hand...well, we already know their stance on the matter.

I would not be at all surprised to see an announcement for the PS5 within the next two years, tops. We'll probably see the hardware by 2021, if not much earlier.

Consoles are a mess right now.

I thought i heard that SONY says still believed in console generations.

Kotaku did an interesting piece, analyzing his 2013 predictions for 2016. He's actually not entirely terrible at his job. Unless you listen to Segment Next, of whom I have never heard and are a bit more loose with providing the original text by Patcher while cherry picking examples.
