Microsoft Announces Project xCloud Game-Streaming Initiative

Game Informer has the story.

Quote:

Microsoft has announced Project xCloud a game-streaming initiative letting you play Xbox and PC-quality titles on your phone or tablet. More details on the initiative are coming, and public trials start in 2019.

The service, which the company talked about at E3 this year, is currently up and running at Microsoft on a 4G network (at 10 megabits per second) and will work with 5G, and players can either control games pairing their Xbox controller via Bluetooth or use a "game-specific touch input overlay," according to Microsoft's announcement blog (click the source link below).

The service is compatible with "existing and future Xbox games," but it's unknown at this time what games will work with xCloud. However, the video below mentions and shows various first-party titles and franchises including Halo, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 4. The introductory blog assures developers that utilizing the service requires "no additional work."

For me, compression technology still needs to come a long way before I can give streaming a chance. Anything streamed still looks bad when compared to having something that is being rendered locally.

Shit if I can play Assassin's Creed Odyssey on my phone or tablet with an xbox controller while at work, I'd be super excited. That's always been a problem I've tried to solve, and gaming laptops only last a couple years and they're obsolete, plus they're big to lug around. I even have bought a Gaems console case with the built in screen for this same reason, but again it's just too big to take around daily. This will fill a need I've had for years.

I am not at all interested in a game streaming service, much like music streaming services. Putting my purchases in the hands of such a service is a guarantee of losing it in the future, I know this is where the industry is heading but I can not follow it there out of principal.

This sounds great if it works. Put it all on the cloud, I say.

When my tv is in use, I can run the XBox app on my PC and play Forza Horizon 4 just fine. It's fantastic.
