DOOM Eternal Delayed Until March 2020

Sheesh. That sucks, that was one of the only games I was looking forward to.

Oh come on I want to play it now!!

Developers are like.. "YEAHHHH"!

vallor 10-09-2019 02:34 AM

At least this is an excuse I can believe.

Performance work always seems to come last. Mostly because devs create the game (usually) on hardware far superior to what most gamers have available. This is even more true for consoles as dev kits are much more generous with things like RAM unless you switch them to retail mode.

Plus there's usually so much placeholder early on it's hard to get your final performance profile, especially if your dev team is late or too lazy to give the other teams their budgets. This is most applicable for art who are particularly reliant on knowing how much memory they are allowed to use in any particular scene.

If the dev estimates are off, or never provided, it is easy for an artist to create "heavy" assets and then level design can overuse assets making it so a scene exceeds the allowable budget.

Budgets need to be established up front so performance optimization doesn't consume a month or two of dev effort at the end! And these changes can cascade across the game. If an artist or LD has to chew a scene down it means the gameplay or aesthetic of the game can suffer if they don't take the time to refactor the whole thing properly.

Other items, like engine issues, also tend to crop up. If they do these can be seriously risky fixes which require huge amounts of testing across all functional aspects of the game.

So in this case where they say they haven't hit their speed benchmark and they need 3 more months, they found something wrong. Or they have to do a bunch more optimization work to get it to run on the XBOX One and PS/4, much less the Switch.

I find it hard to be annoyed by this. I'd rather the game was polished and optimised on release, because I will play it on release, not 6 months later when the bugs are fixed, as happens with some other games. I'm still pumped for it, but if I have to wait... it's done when it's done right?

koorb 10-09-2019 06:04 AM

This is fine, but now really looking forward to playing Doom 64 too!

Inkabodcrane 10-09-2019 06:05 AM

Well, there goes one of the few remaining games I was looking forward to this fall/winter. Hard to be that upset, I want it to be as good as possible.

shadow763 10-09-2019 06:09 AM

I wish Doom 64 came out still to serve as a placeholder to help alleviate that wait.

excalibur1814 10-09-2019 07:24 AM

I never played Doom 64. Looking forward to having a blast.

karaliusbronius 10-10-2019 07:53 AM

Maybe it'll give them extra time to add coop to the campaign? If not, not a buy for me.

Mad Max RW 10-10-2019 10:05 AM

Download Brutal Doom 64 now. It is awesome and a canonical sequel to Doom 2.

I don't think they will sadly... boggles the mind why they wouldn't.

I'm sure fans will mod it in, and if players can be player controlled monsters, that means they'll be playing with A.I controlled monsters... meaning the basic net code code could allow for mods.

COOP!

Evil Avatar 10-13-2019 08:39 AM

Just ordered a copy of DOOM 3 for the Xbox One X. It’s hilarious that they put a 360 copy of DOOM 3 in an Xbox One X box at one point. That says a lot about how few real exclusives the Xbox One really has.

It will be fun to play. I played like 80% of DOOM 3 on the PC, then about 20% on the PS3. I need to sit down and just go through the whole thing.
