Nothing this week other than maybe watching Ant-Man and The Wasp this weekend.

I just bought tickets for Saturday. Taking the Ivy with me.

I'll be picking up the JoJo set this week. It's the part of the series that introduced Stands, which is essentially the entire reason why we have the Persona games.

Ant-Man and The Wasp should be good. I enjoyed Ant-Man, and pretty much every other MCU movie.

Yea, they are really on a roll. Hard to believe Star Wars has been so bad or average and the Marvel movies have been so good.

Well, it might be because Kevin Feige found out you don't go and do stuff the fans won't like much. In fact Kevin Feige is so good at managing the MCU in part because he's a fan himself.

There's an old saying about success having many fathers, and while many people did indeed create the circumstances for Marvel Studios to launch in 2008, studio president Kevin Feige has been the face and ringmaster of the groundbreaking move. He is, above all, a fan, and his knowledge of the vast Marvel canon gives him the ability to orchestrate the movies with dexterity and passion. Feige know the stories and his audience, and has found a way to be faithful to and respectful of both while continuing to make good movies. It's quite the hat trick.
This is where Star Wars has failed.

Another success in MCU where Kathleen Kennedy has failed?

Quote:

That’s part of what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe great. While some fans had been hoping to see Mark Ruffalo get his own Hulk movie between Avengers titles, they had their appetite satisfied with his significant role in Thor: Ragnarok. All of Marvel’s established characters can pop up in other franchises, especially those who have a long history in comic crossovers. Plus, as we saw with Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, new characters can be introduced in other franchises, so they won’t always need the traditional, increasingly tired origin story to set them up.
Maybe this was the hope with Qu'ri and the Crimson Dawn in Solo? A big part of the problem is (besides being too little too late and bolted on to a problematic movie from the start) is there's no touchstone for the fans or other hint this was leading to anything more significant.

After Ep 9, what happens? We have 6 or so new canon heroes of various likability and no sense of what comes next because Star Wars hasn't built itself any sense of continuity, phase 1, 2, 3 or whatever.

Marvel has always looked to the future. Star Wars is mining the (recent) past with nothing to look forward to. Even Crimson Dawn only looks "forward to" events that are in the past as far as Ep. 7, 8, and 9 are concerned.

Evil Avatar 07-04-2018 07:54 AM

The introduction of the Crimson Dawn and the resurrection of Darth Maul were intended to be groundwork for Solo Part 2 and Solo Part 3. The problem is that after the complete and total failure of Solo and the possible exit of Kathleen Kennedy from Star Wars that this plot line now has nowhere to go. As you said, it should have been a central part of Solo instead of just a cameo at the end. It might have helped the plot along if we knew a popular villain was behind everything from the start. Vader is no less cool because you saw him at the beginning of Star Wars. They didn’t hold their cool villain to the end and it worked fine.

Marvel is doing great, but the Avengers movies themselves haven’t done that well. Age of Ultron was kind of a flop with fans even though it had an ultra cool villain and made gobs of money. The difference here is how Marvel just bounced right back with killer movies like Ant-Man, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther. (Not to mention Guardians of the Galaxy 2.) They didn’t let one movie drag them down and they put more effort into the next films.

Notice also that after Ultron and Civil War had kind of a “Meh” response that they made the smart move and brought the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos into the Avengers straight away. They didn’t do what Last Jedi did and let themselves get bogged down with bad characters. Luke, Finn and Poe should have been the center of Last Jedi, not the character everyone hated from the previous film (MaRey Sue) and a washed up fat drug addict with so much plastic surgery that she could barely move her face (Leia).

Star Wars just doubles down on the failure, Marvel moves past their average films, as you said, with new characters and new stories.

I've had fun with the Purge films, but this one looks the least interesting. That surprises me because I initially thought seeing how it all started would be awesome. Will wait for video/streaming.

Obviously seeing Ant Man. No brainer.

Next week I'll try to catch Sicario 2, then comes Mission Impossible, Slender Man, and The Predator. Not sure if the last 2 will be good but I hope so.
