Microsoft’s ‘Forza’ Tops $1 Billion In Sales

Quote:

Microsoft has minted its fifth billion-dollar video-game franchise. The “Forza” racing series in December topped $1 billion in lifetime sales since the first game’s release 12 years ago, Microsoft said Monday.

Microsoft-owned Turn 10 Studios released “Forza Horizon 3” last year, the ninth game in the series. The original “Forza Motorsport” was released in 2005 with the launch of the Xbox 360 console.

Well, I never played anything in the series prior to Forza Horizon 3. But I've been having a blast with that. If I have any complaints, it's option overload (so many markers and side options on the map can be overwhelming if all I want to do is race). I also question how authentic some of the engine noise is (a lot of them sound the same to me, or different than what I'd expect for the car I'm driving). Just being nitpicky though. The game is a blast.

The first one i tried was Forza 2 and i've loved it ever since. Although now i like the Horizon series more than the Motorsport series.

I wouldn't be that excited, Microsoft. It only took Halo and Gears of War about 3 games and 5 or 6 years to do the same.

Granted MS isn't spending $100m in Marketing for a Forza title but we can pretty much assume a Forza title is a $60m endevor all inclusive of prod/dev, marketing, and so on. Net CM? Probably about 200m over the 10 years since the game's inception vs. 3 - 4* as much net on Gears or Halo.

Funny to say about a game where the point is usually speedy mcFast Fast but slow and steady may prove to win this race where Gears and Halos and so on seem to be tapering out.

I think maybe the more impressive stat is how the series has thrived for 10 years and consistently maintained its quality level across two pretty different audiences; the racers and the more casuals who enjoy the more Horizons type style all the while upsetting the old standard bearers. Unseating Grand Turismo was no mean feat.

Forza feels souless to me. I don't like the games. But whatever.
