Sources: Microsoft Plots Fable Return

Eurogamer has the story.

Quote:

Work is underway on a brand new, big-budget Fable game, Eurogamer can reveal.

Fable franchise owner Microsoft has tasked UK developer Playground, which makes the Forza Horizon racing games for Xbox and PC, with creating this new Fable, sources close to the project have told Eurogamer. Microsoft said in a statement it does not comment on rumour or speculation.

We've heard the new Fable is planned as a story and character-focussed open-world action RPG. A significant investment in its development is also planned, with some 200 people set to work on the game at Playground's newly-established second office in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Don't expect to play this new Fable any time soon, however. We've heard it's early days in terms of development, with Playground currently staffing up the team from double digits to its triple digit target.

I hate this series with a blinding passion. Shake a hand, shake a hand, follow the glowing road signs, shake a hand, shake a hand.

FU!

I loved the first game for what it was, but my fondness for the series diminished with each successive sequel.

I'm not really interested in Fable anymore, unfortunately.

Just WHO THE FUCK are you Microsoft??!?!?!

What do you care about? What are your goals?

Same, really enjoyed the first, and then the series just devolved from there to following that glowing line, opening the occasional chest, and button mashing some enemies to death.

Weren't they working on a free-to-play Fable game for a while that would focus on microtransactions - and then it got canned?

And you know what? I'm not sure why they're doing this right now. A 200 person staff. Even if the game turns out to be absolutely amazing - a must-buy - by the time it comes out in a year and a half or 2, the next generation of consoles will be rumored, if not announced. Seems late in the game to JUST start up a 200-man "epic" open world game for the Bone. And on top of that, it'll be on PC. I don't know. I just don't understand MS in the console space anymore.

I liked Fable 1,2 and 3. Microsoft has missed handled a bunch of their IPs. I really don't have much faith in them anymore. Why did they give up on mech assault, Jrpg s and a bunch of canceled projects over the years ?

I want another good fable game but I am not holding my breath.

I’d like to see them actually make “Project Ego”. That is to say, make the Fable game that Molyneux was pitching 20 years ago. I think the tech is finally at a level where that could actually exist.

Let it die, I say.

This. Why don't they just get out of video games...Only thing i can think of is they are treading water and working on the holodeck stuff.

I think most people hold the same sentiment. I loved the first, enjoyed the second (but much less than the first), and more or less hated the third.

I think that so long as Peter Molyneux isn't involved in the project, it could be good.

They're like a stupid 20 year-old with all the potential in the world and no long-term direction.

With gaming, at least...

FH3 is the only good exclusive this gen so I am definitely interested to see if they can harness that energy and pull this off.

ElektroDragon 01-17-2018 09:14 PM

Fable 1 I could not get far in, lost interest.

Fable 2 though was EPIC.

Fable 3 the best part was the intro video.

Fable 4..... it needs to beat the crap out of Witcher 3 to interest me. Which COULD happen, since as much as I loved Witcher 3 early on, I got so bored with the endless Novingrad city quests that I got halfway through and never finished.

I think all the doom and gloom about MS will be gone in a few years. They miscalculated. Happens. Sony did it with the PS3. Halo proves that all it takes is one good game to turn everything around.

MS has no less direction than Sony. In fact, MS had ideas that were way more interesting and innovative than anything Sony was doing at the launch of the consoles with things like Zoo Tycoon, Project Sparc, etc. but people don't like new ideas or innovation. They want what they already know until someone forces the next big thing on them, kicking and screaming. The PSVR Reddit is chock full of people everyday posting "I was a.VR hater. It I just tried PSVR and now I'm in love "

Goal is making money hand over fist while caring about Cloud and AI. That about sums it up.

Agree. The player guide for Fable 2 could literally be written as 'follow the golden line'.

Microsoft continue to flounder, starting up big projects like this is part of the solution but why did they have to retreat to the safe space of 'yet another sequel'. I really don't see how they recover this gen. Better to get the next xbox out for xmas 2019 and try and not shit the bed again.

Metal Jesus 01-18-2018 08:21 AM

Fable 2 was almost perfect. Really curious to see if they can bring the magic back!

RobotFloyd13 01-18-2018 08:57 AM

Fable 1 stuck out for me for 2 reasons (I never played the others)
1. The girl I was playing ended up looking like a ball. Not muscular, fat.
2. I get to the end bad guy. He's monologuing. I sat there thinking "I wonder what would happen if I just shot him right now?". I did. He died in one shot. Game over?

Capt_Thad 01-18-2018 01:45 PM

I gotta be the only person who enjoyed Fable 3 the most. Might be biased, I played Anniversary after Fable 3 and never got a chance to play Fable 2--it's still not on PC. Maybe enjoyment of the series is tied to whichever one you played first. I liked the rifles though, don't think those were in the other games.

Forza Horizon 3 was pretty spectacular; I'd like to see what Playground Games can do with the Fable IP.

Meusli 01-21-2018 09:36 AM

You lot might not be happy but my wife who hardly games is, shows where this series lies tbh.
