I would not take that bet, despite my cautious optimism.
I'll see it, of course. If anyone can get this done right, it's Whedon. But I think there are too many things working against this film for it to be able to really live up to the hype and expectations that have been building up these past few years.
And it's still a goddamn crime that Loki is the villain instead of the Red Skull.

I wouldn't take that bet at all. Avatar had Cameron's name and history attached to it, this has comics attached to it. It'll be big, but it won't be that big.
And by the crime about the villain, don't you mean it's a crime that the Hulk is part of the team from day 1, as opposed to the reason the team Assembles in the first place? The Hulk was their first villain. Although he was being tricked by Loki at the time, so if anything, their choice still makes more sense than Red Skull. Also, who knows, maybe part of the plot of the movie revolves around the Avengers getting the Hulk after Loki tricks him.

Red Skull didn't die in Captain America (the movie), he got teleported to Asgard (sp) or something that looked like it. He could still appear in this movie.
I agree though -- I think Loki is a better main villain.

Avatar isn't even in the top 10 for opening weekends, domestic or worldwide. It wasn't known for a huge opening, it was known for not dropping much the following weekends.
Harry Potter holds the worldwide opening weekend record at over $450 million. $169million domestic.
I'm thinking it will sit somewhere in between those 2 for openings.

Is this movie supposed to center around Captain America? I thought I read that somewhere.

I thought this movie centered around the Avengers. Pretty sure I read that somewhere...
Oh, yeah. The title.
Seriously though, if anyone has been highlighted in trailers, it's been Tony Stark/Ironman.

All the characters will get enough screen time to push their next movies. I can't see it possible to have it be a single character driven or centered movie with the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Hulk, Black Widow, Fury, Loki, and lets face it, its the drell in the movie.
And I am sure they will have some surprise thing in it like maybe a potential set up to Red Skull for the sequel to this movie.

I guess what I am trying to say with Captain America, is that there is more meat on that bone to use in this movie, but there is plenty on the others as well to have it not be a single character driven movie. You have all strong actors on all the characters that proved they can push movies. No point to center just on one.

Last week I finally got around to watching Thor and I could have sworn Loki gets killed at the end when he fell off the bridge. Continuity issue??
I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked Thor by the way. While skimming the credits I happened to notice one of the writers was the great J. Michael Straczynski from Babylon 5 fame.

No continuity issue, you needed to watch after the credits to see that Loki was actually still alive. I believe that is the one where he sees the cosmic cube I am not mistaken.

Downy Jr. is the non-emo version of Johnny Depp I've always wanted.

Yeah, every marvel movie had something. First Iron Man introduced Nick Fury, second Iron Man, introduced Thor with the hammer landing in the desert. Thor I wanted to say was the cosmic cube with Loki looking at it through a reflection. Captain America I can't remember off the top of my head.
