It's Sunday: What NFL Games Are You Watching?

We're down to four teams.

Who do you think is going to the big dance?

Packers against Patriots in the SB. I'd like to see Pittsburgh beat NE, but with a minor epidemic of stomach flu on the team and a 3 a.m. false fire alarm wakeup this morning (thanks Pats fans , why not just deflate the footballs instead, eh?), I think they're going to be in rough shape by the fourth quarter.

I'm hoping Falcons against Steelers in the SB. I think we'll get the opposite.

I'm going with the Yankees versus Slippery Rock. FYI, I don't watch sports much.

At this point, it's pretty boring to me as it's always the same group of teams that always go to the Superbowl. They say there is more parity but there's not when you have the same teams in the mix every year. Let's look at the most Superbowl appearances by team with 5 or more appearances:

8 Dallas Cowboys
8 Denver Broncos
8 New England Patriots
8 Pittsburgh Steelers
6 San Francisco 49ers
5 Green Bay Packers
5 Miami Dolphins
5 New York Giants
5 Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders
5 Washington Redskins

Now let's look at who was in the playoffs this year:

Raiders(5)
Texans(0)
Dolphins(5)
*Steelers(8)
*Patriots(8)
Chiefs(1)
Seahawks(3)
Lions(0)
Giants(5)
*Packers(5)
Cowboys(8)
*Falcons(1)

Wow, what a surprise. Over half of the teams that started the playoffs this season have been to the Superbowl 5 or more times. The teams still in the hunt have a combined 22 Superbowl appearances, with 3 of them having 5 or more (and 2 with 8).

Yawn.

I really do think that the NFL should expand the playoffs to two more teams and get rid of that first round bye. When you have wildcard teams going to and even winning the Superbowl, I think there is room for more. And I don't think it will make the regular season meaningless. Many people tune out on their teams, not in, once they know they won't make the playoffs.

I'm hoping for Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Which means we'll probably get New England and Green Bay.

I'm honestly not trying to rub it in but this is why your near messianic praise of Rodgers last week was kind of ridiculous. He's good but he's nowhere near as good as some people have implied. The NFL marketing around him is strong but when the cards are down and things aren't looking good, he's not the kind of guy who will put a team on his back and drag them to victory.

After having to sit through the ridiculous responses and reactions to Green Bay's last-second win last week, I relished watching them get utterly destroyed.

Unfortunately, it also looks like the friggin' Patriots are going to the Super Bowl again.

The NFL has a serious problem; the games are boring as hell. Almost every single playoff game has sucked donkey nuts.

It's got lots of other problems too: thug life players who beat their women; disciplinary procedures that are clearly hypocritical and inconsistent; far too many commercials and game delays; progressive broadcasters tossing completely unrelated ideological nonsense into their game commentary; an inability to get calls right and consistent even with replays; a brain damage time bomb (perhaps the progressive commentators were previously football players, lol); and on and on.

But at its most basic level, the product is boring. These playoff games have almost all sucked. GB v. Dallas last week was a rare exception.

In the NFL website last week, Rodgers was compared to Michael Jordan (the author of the piece was roasted with reason by the commenters) .. Damn that bit them in the ass this week. What a complete meltdown by Green Bay.

I want the Patriots to win ir all , that is my team, I want to see them making history, but I don't think they can stop the Falcons with they way they are playing right now... Damn! What a machine.

In my view, here are some of the major issues with the NFL:

-They have ever-changing vague rules that can, and often do, drastically affect the outcome of the game.
- They market everything to the extreme to the point where you just get sick of certain players or events due to over-saturation.
- The announcing sucks. John Madden and Pat Summerall were a fantastic duo but they haven't really had great announcers in a while. That affects to overall package a great deal.
- The drama is ridiculous. I am NOT a Patriots fan but the whole hubub over Deflategate was a joke. Aaron Rodgers doesn't talk to his family?!?!? I don't care. Kapernick won't stand for the anthem? Just leave him off camera then. Stop making this a soap opera.

And lastly, I don't buy the bit about boring games really. A 10-7 game can be exciting when you have two defenses playing really well. Running games can be really exciting and satisfying. Watching Priest Holmes run behind blockers or watching Barry Sanders run pretty much anywhere he wanted was like watching artists at work. But now people want popular QBs slinging the ball everywhere for every second of the game.

I realize that I'm probably coming across as a football curmudgeon but I just don't enjoy the NFL as I once did and with the ratings dropping off, I can't help but wonder if my feelings are not uncommon.
