Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons Connect To PC, Mac, And Android Devices

Quote:
We've already learned that the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect to your PC, but YouTube user DreWoof confirmed yesterday it's also possible to pair Joy-Cons to your other devices via Bluetooth as well.

Because Joy-Cons use Bluetooth to communicate with the Switch, they can also be paired as controllers to other Bluetooth-capable devices. At this stage, each Joy-Con will pair as a single controller, meaning it's only possible to use one each for two-player games. Using them both as a single controller—as per the Switch in handheld-mode—isn't supported by default, though it's possible third-party software or driver updates could be used to solve that problem in the future.

Currently the controllers can be paired to PC, Mac, and Android devices with Bluetooth. Because iOS devices use a different wireless specification, you unfortunately won't be able to use Joy-Cons to control your iPhone or iPad games any time soon.

I find this a little surprising only in that it seemed that Nintendo's odd controllers were part of their whole stance against piracy. I.E. it's harder to play their games on an emulator when they have a non-standard controller. Maybe they've given up on that.

Looks like you still need an app to map the keys. Nice to not need a custom driver, at least.

Well, it's cheaper to adopt off the shelf solutions, and often more robust as well. That's my read, they simply aren't fighting it.

But doesn't that mean that we now have 1:1 positional trackers that could be made cheap VR-input devices?

Perhaps Nintendo is sly like a fox on this one, if those controllers saw adaptation to that purpose, they could follow it with a VR console of some sort?

It's unlikely, but this is Nintendo, they push the tech limits in terms of interface, if not graphics.

Could do that with the Wiimotes already, and they're cheaper. The Joy-cons are better tech, but we still need custom drivers to use them as a pair. The article also says button inputs are recognized, but doesn't say anything about the sensors.

Do the joycons really do 1:1 motion though? They're not tracked by anything other than the gyros inside are they? The Wiimotes at least had the sensor bar in addition to the gyros for tracking.

The sensor bar is for positional tracking. The joy-cons still have accelerometer/gyrosensor for motion tracking (wiimote+ added gyro to get the 1:1 claim), and they're supposed to be much more accurate than the Wiimotes. The right joy-con has an IR camera which supposedly can track position/motion of nearby objects, but not sure if it can be used to track relative position of the controller to the system.

The original Wiimotes had accelerometers but not gyros, the addition of the gyro gave them 1:1 sans sensor bar.

The sensor bar was primarily for correction purposes anyway, the accelerometers build up error over time, but the sensors bar gave them an anchor in space to correct back to.

With the gyro added in, this is unnecessary.

I don't see why you would ever want to use those terrible things on PC.
