Deadpool 2 Loses Director Tim Miller Over Creative Differences #Deadpool2

The Hollywood Reporter has the story.

Quote:
Tim Miller, who directed Deadpool and had a hand in giving Fox its biggest hit of the year, will not direct Deadpool 2.

The director has parted ways with the studio over what insiders say are creative differences with Ryan Reynolds, the actor who plays the Marvel character.

Deadpool made $786 million worldwide when it opened on Valentineís Day this year, launching a new franchise for the studio. The movie re-energized the career of Reynolds but it also began a second act for Miller, a visual effects specialist who founded Blur Studios and made a name for himself making video game trailers and opening credits.

By all accounts, success of the movie was truly shared by Reynolds, who helped define the voice to the characters, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and Miller. In fact, Miller is believed to be the one who leaked Deadpool test footage into the wilds of the Internet, with the ensuing enthusiastic reaction just what was needed to ensure that Fox, which was waffling whether or not to make the movie, gave it the green light.

Even before the movieís opening, the gang was back together plotting the sequel. Deadpool 2 is in the casting stages and is in the middle of testing six actresses for the part of Domino, the projectís new female lead.

Sources say Reynolds and Miller had increasingly butted heads over certain creative issues. Reynolds was a producer on the original, along with Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner, but sources say his clout has increased exponentially on the sequel.

Bummer. Still, it was Reynolds who kinda pushed the return of the Deadpool character and pushed for it to be R-Rated. So, I trust that if there are creative differences that he might be the one in the right here.

Anyone can direct this movie, (look at every Marvel super hero movie ever) it's the actor and the writers who are doing the bulk of the heavy lifting.

This doesn't make anything better.

How can an actor have creative differences with the director? Is he the director or not?

Reynolds was also a producer and was a major driving force behind the film's direction and it's sheer existence.

Creative differences between actors and directors are extremely common. Things went Reynolds' way because he's extremely important to this project.

That's right. They can't make this film without Ryan Reynolds. They can, however, make it without Miller. That's just cold, hard reality.

Well Directors have control over an actors performance. So there are a lot of films in which actors get panned for crappy acting when, in reality, they were following the directors directions. IF there is ever a film where an actor you like and except good things from is acting strangely or abnormally poorly, it's usually the directors fault.

I feel like one of the only people who thought the first one was pretty dumb. I mean I know it was sort of supposed to be dumb in a way but I heard it described as the Spencer's Gifts of movies and I felt like it was spot on. It felt like it was written by a 13 year old boy. I wonder how much the director of this thing is going to even matter.

As someone who had zero faith in it, and pretty much hates Deadpool, I thought it was pretty good. I think you're absolutely right about it being dumb, but I think that's the ironic appeal. It circumvented a lot of superhero cliches' which is worth applauding just for the sake of it being done. The real charm of the film, though, was it's limited budget. It has l like 2 sets and 1 set piece. I thought it made for a much quieter and therefore grounded film than almost any other Marvel film. I really appreciated that.

I agree that it's not what people make of it, though.

Reynolds won the Deadpool role even before the Deadpool movie. So safe to say its still is in good hands.

Factor in that he don't have to worry about Tom Rothman in charge of Fox movies.

Aye. Still a shame when it happens of course, and in this case I think it all boils down to two passionate people wanting to take things in their own directions and not being able to find common ground with this particular project.

I think when you look at the kind of money the first film brought in, like $800 million, for that kind of money these two guys should have sat down and found a way to work together to bring back the magic of the first film.

Like I said above, I still think Reynolds is the magic key to bring this movie to life, but when you are talking about a project that is going to make everyone involved gobs and gobs of money, it sure feels like there would be a way to put your ego aside and find some common ground to move forward.

Seriously. I bet there is a 500 page handbook at this point that every director has to follow to make a Marvel franchise film. Winter Soldier and Civil War were two of my favorites, and the directors had barely made anything at all prior to Winter Soldier.
