Blizzard Is 'Hard at Work on the Future of Diablo'

There will be no Diablo-related announcements at this year's BlizzCon, but Blizzard says that they are "hard at work on the future of Diablo and exploring what’s next for the franchise.". IGN has the story.

Quote:
Blizzard has announced it won't be making any Diablo-related announcements at this year's BlizzCon.

"This year, we want to give you a heads-up that while Diablo will be on the show floor, we won’t be making any new Diablo announcements," Blizzard wrote on the Battle.net forums.

"There will be a time for that at some point in the future, but that time is not now."

While the company isn't set to reveal what's next for Diablo, BlizzCon 2017 won't ignore the series entirely. The convention, which takes place November 3-4, will feature Diablo panels for both attendees and Virtual Ticket holders, as well as a "special BlizzCon Diablo III in-game reward."

The developers are currently working on Diablo III's 2.6.1 patch, and are also, according to the post,"hard at work on the future of Diablo and exploring what’s next for the franchise."

They're probably still trying to figure out how to monetize the series like they have just about all of their other properties with in-game transactions and the like. The RMAH* was a total clusterfark, and a game that hinges on loot collection makes the in-game sale of loot a bit...shall we say complex...to pull off.

Really want a new Diablo, but I'm actually not terribly hopeful.

The game was much, much better after the RoS expansion. I'm hoping they release another expansion, or an entirely new Diablo game. I hope they don't turn the series into an MMO.

I agree. I've played the crap out of it post-RoS and I bought the necro pack and played enough to deck out all four set builds in all ancients, so I'm still enjoying it. I just see Diablo as a different beast from their other properties, harder to monetize in a way that keeps cash flowing.

There isn't any money in MMOs at this point. The future of Diablo doesn't lie in a dying genre.

The Diablo franchise is dead. Blizzard killed it and there’s no way they’ll do any better with D4. Then again, how can any ARPG dethrone PoE....

nope, not yet it isn't....

Remember, they don't HAVE to go the same genre.

I keep wondering when Blizzard is going to make a good Witcher-style game or some type of action adventure.

As long as it isn't another card game or MOBA, I'm game.

On a related note, now that Hob is complete, I'd love to see Runic Games do a Torchlight III. But with Travis Baldree and Eric Shaeffer gone working on who_knows_what following Rebel Galaxy, I'm not sure how it would stack up.

I hope the franchise isn't dead. RoS is a ton of fun, but it's no longer the pinnacle of the genre that it once was and it's obvious they have very few folks tasked with keeping the game going at this point.

I just have no idea where they take the series next, and I wonder if that's their problem too.

I really need to try PoE. Might also check out Grim Dawn. Or Divinity: OS2.

Path of Exile is really fun. Short, but fun.

I preferred Grim Dawn to Path of Exile, but both are great additions to the genre.

I've had difficulty getting into either. I've tried PoE 2-3 different times, and it just doesn't mesh with me. I can't really explain in words... it just felt meh. Grim Dawn essentially felt the same, though I enjoyed it more.

Diablo 3 is much simpler, and very easy to grasp immediately. That's the kind of game I need since I don't dedicate as much free time to gaming. If the game is too complex, requiring me to read up on guides or think too much, it's not for me. In addition to not having enough free time, I'm lazy in my old age.

Diablo III was just an utter disappointment for me. Beat it when it first came out and never touched it again.

What are some of these other games in the genre you guys are mentioning? Would love to try something that puts Diablo to shame.

If you haven't touched D3 since prior to Reaper of Souls dropping, you've experienced the game as a shell of its current self. RoS improved the game substantially. I've greatly enjoyed it since then, and I hated it when it first dropped.

I've been trying Path of Exile, which I've heard good things about, and have enjoyed it (though I'm just at level 7). I've also heard good things about Grim Dawn but haven't tried that.

PoE is much grittier than D3, more akin to D2 than D3 is frankly. Also, there's little hand-holding. The skill tree about gave me an epileptic seizure, lol.

So icky and sad.

Its a good job graphics are just about as good as they need to be. Because even now im just about to the point where im going to call it, stop buying games and just play what i have. Diablo 3 was a great game. Just make another one of those.

Make D4 better with a longer and more interesting campaign instead of all the endgame activity nonsense.

...The campaign was just as long as D2's. At least D3 has something of an endgame; D2 just involved endless boss runs.

POE doesn't get guuuud until lvl 20-30. Once you get a triple fireball-wielding sword WITH cleave, and it just can't keep up, it starts becoming important to manage inventory.
