METAL JESUS ROCKS!: Games That Make You Go Hurk

The 80s was such a magical decade to be a young man. Videogames were in their golden era, the Saturday morning cartoon line-up didn't suck, and giant robot awesomeness was as ubiquitous as it was abundant. And while the collective popularity of cartoons and toys based on massive mechanical body-suits faded as the 80s gave way to the 90s, we did still see a slate of excellent mech-based videogames during those years.

The releases based on the MechWarrior license were by far the most popular titles in the genre during that time, but there were other competitors within the space. And probably the strongest challenger to the MechWarrior crown was Sierra Online's Metaltech: Earthsiege series. Interestingly, both Metal Jesus and cohort Drunken Master Paul have a direct connection to these games, having worked at Sierra during the time the Earthsiege titles were being developed, even being tasked with performing QA and providing customer support for them.

So given their behind-the-scenes access to the series, do the dubnium duo have any interesting Earthsiege tidbits to share? Is Mazinger Z's control module detachable? Check out this week's episode of METAL JESUS ROCKS!:

Lols at DMP's spoon shirt. For the next video, he really needs to be wearing a "The Tick" costume.

I really, really wanted to get Cyberstorm working on my XP machine...but the damn game won't run...and none of my Sierra buddies could help. The game...is DEAD. So sad, because I used to kinda like that funky Warcraft/Command & Conquer clone.

As for DMP's t-shirt...well... what do you know?! (A little pricey, I know... but we're trying it out)

Ha! That's awesome. Can we have a METAL JESUS ROCKS! T-shirt design contest for the next one?

Oh man, I would love to have some artistic types create some t-shirt ideas and logos!! Great idea. Maybe we'll do that when I reach 10,000 subscribers...which should happen this summer.

Great video but I could never get into the starsiege mech games. Just too clunky for my tastes. Tribes on the other hand... hell yes and the first game to force the player to have to think in 3D in order to be effective. (some bases only had vertical entrances and corridors which was truly thinking outside the box compared to anything of its time)

I'd be down to design a Metal Jeez teeshirt.

Okay, you woke up a part of my childhood with the Grendizer video. Now I have to peer inward, and see what resides in that deeply buried portion of my psyche. I fear what i might find ...

And you missed some of the best mech toys ever. They came out in the 90s.

Battletech I had a Mauler, and it was awesome and eyeball-poking dangerous
EXO Squad And the cartoon rocked, too

EXO Squad absolutely rocked.

As for other mech/battlesuit games/things, there was another series that Activision tried when they lost their MechWarrior license...Heavy Gear, I think?
