PC Engine/TG-16 Shmups!

Over the last couple of years I've really grown to love a genre of games that I didn't like in my youth. Shmups! And if you love shooters the PC Engine/TG-16 is the perfect console for you!

My current Favorites on the system are:
  • Download 2 (PC Engine CD)
  • Blazing Lazers (TG-16 HuCard)
  • Parodius Da! (PC Engine HuCard)
  • Super Star Soldier (TG-16 HuCard)
  • Soldier Blade (TG-16 HuCard)
  • Raiden (TG-16 HuCard)
  • Psychosis (TG-16 HuCard)
  • Kiaidan 00 (PC Engine CD)
  • R-Type Complete (PC Engine CD)
  • Star Parodia (PC Engine CD)
  • Gate of Thunder (PC Engine CD)

I love side-scrolling or top-down shmups/shooters, especially the ones with a gamepad and twin-stick (analog) controls. Awesome fun.

Gradius.
Galaga.
R-Type.
Ikaruga.
Smash TV.
Geometry Wars.
Halo: Spartan Strike and Spartan Assault.
Assault Heroes.
Alien Breed.
Renegade Ops.
Bangai-O

The list goes on and on. Great fun, especially those that allow cooperative play.

I dig twin-stick shooters too!

Dam Turbo stuff is bank right now. I knew it would be at some point. I've been wanting to get back into this stuff for a while now and now i have the room.

Bearded, any advice on what console to buy and what mods to do? I am way out of the loop on things. I want to do an Everdrive and burn CD's and hope prices come down.

Maybe another thread is needed. Im gonna do some poking around.

Great question. It all depends on what you want to do. If you're a SHMUP guy like me I would get a Duo R/RX. They have the system 3 card built in, and the CD games are not region locked, so you can play both US and Japanese CD games. With that system 3 card build in you should be able to play 99% of the the CDs released.

On top of that the Duo R and RX models had better Caps, so you shouldn't have to take the thing apart, and replace the Caps on the mother board.

The Duo also comes with composite AV jacks, so no MOD needed there.

Now if you want to play US HuCard games you could do this MOD, or I know there are other converters out there, but don't have time this morning to dig into them.

I hope this helps a little, and hit me with any other questions. I'll do my best to answer.

This is what i will do, a Duo R. Maybe ill ask for one for Christmas. I do like the looks of the US Duo, but the JP Duo looks good in its own way. Plus its JDM YO!

I daydreamed about a Duo so much as a kid, it was just too much money in my house. When i was around 13 I actually wrote a letter to EGM about the CD add on dropping to $150 haha. Never sent it off though. Then SF2 came out for SNES and my Turbo was forgotten about.

And ironically the Turbo got one of the best versions of SF2
