LawBreakers Dev Launches New Battle Royale Game, Radical Heights

From the Cliff Bleszinski files. GameSpot has the story.

Quote:
Boss Key Productions, the studio founded by Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski and developer of LawBreakers, has revealed Radical Heights, a "free *X-TREME Early Access* battle royale shooter," which will be available on Steam Early Access on April 10.

Like most battle royale games, Radical Heights tasks contestants with surviving against other players, but adds its own twist on the formula by inviting players to use vehicles to give themselves the advantage. On top of that, you can collect cash and deposit it in the bank, to use later on regardless of whether you win or lose the match.

"Partake in high-stakes battle royale gunplay in a sunny SoCal dome as contestants drive-by on BMX bikes or stalk other contestants from the shadows in search for weapons and prizes," reads the game's Steam page. "But also cash that you can bank--win or lose! Whether you spend that cash on righteous customization in your personal prize room or pull it from an ATM to purchase weapons early in the next game--building a wealth of cash is as important as taking down the competition in this irreverent 80s-themed action game show where everyone wants to be rich and famous."

According to Boss Key, it has "some really unique twists we want to put in the Battle Royale genre," so launching in Early Access is its way to "share those high level ideas with our community quickly." The studio plans to have Radical Heights in Early Access "for about a year."

I'm starting to get annoyed at how fucking awful the last several reveal trailers have been. What is going on? Please tell me they're trying to be ironic with random boring amateur streamer quality gameplay clips. Who watched that and wants to play it? Whoever is responsible for that trailer (and others posted here recently) doesn't have the editing chops to either hide a shitty game or they're doing a disservice to a good one.

I like the vibe. We'll see how it plays I guess but I agree with Mad Max RW in that the actual combat looks sort of choppy/amateurish in a way.

Dumb. Another flop no one will play. Good job, I guess. I said in the other thread that CliffyB was out of ideas... and I was right.

The models and maps look like something created by mod makers. I also notice that they only show a single vehicle. This is something they threw together at the last minute using the Lawbreakers engine, not a real game.

That worked for Fortnite, because the game was designed around multiplayer and huge maps to start with (and it had great art and a massive number of items).

It won't work here.

They really need a "creative" director. Someone with some vision who wants to do new things -- or do old things in a new way. They just don't seem to have anyone with any creativity working there.

I am liking the idea of this game more than Battle Royal games out there. At least it makes sense as to why these contestants are participating in it. This is very Running Man/Smash TV influenced.

Now, this actually turning out to be something that is fun in the long run remains to be seen, but at worst, I just wasted my time watching a trailer, at best I get something to waste a couple of hours on.

So called it in the other thread. Lol. It was obvious though.

That looked different, old school, if you will.

I am thinking about trying Fortnight as my CoD WWII addiction is wearing off, after 305 hours and over 2000 games with over 1800 war matches.

This looks terrible. Not terrible in a "stylized" art direction way, just terrible. The approach of the over-the-top TV show "Climbing for Dollars" 80s chic is OK, especially with Ready Player One on a lot of people's brain right now but from a tech stand point it looks like the visuals are straight from a long lost era too and not in a good way.

The weapons look boring, the BMX vehicle looks lame, the fighting looks generic, and the movement seems clunky.

I guess they hope to recover from the ashes of Lawbreakers by cashing in on the BR craze but I doubt they have something that will peel people away from Fortnite. People who want this old looking crap can play H1Z1.

I'm just trying to figure out why I should play it personally.

Looks like a free to play game....for china....

I really don't understand it, free to play has to be something you actually want to play.

And free isn't really free, you still use your time to play it, and if you won't even pay for the product....perhaps you won't waste your time on it either, something more precious than money.

At least War Frame look and feels good, even though I don't play that game either

This looks like hot garbage. CLevel exec walks into Boss Key studios: Lawbreakers failed, shut it down. Now make a PUBG clone with a retro 80s theme. Do it in 3 weeks.

lolwut?

This is bankrupt creativity.

Boss Key owner Cliff Bleszinski claims that Epic Games is poaching his staff

I'm calling it now. Boss Key Productions is shut down before the year's end.

This game has now dropped out of the Steam Top 100 games. I think we all knew it was doomed, but it is collapsing faster than I imagined and it seems like it will take the studio with it.

I don't feel sorry for him at all, he does this shit to himself, never mind how out of touch he is. It's not 1999 anymore, twitch shooters like Unreal Tournament aren't the "IN" thing anymore. Generic shooters on top of that even less so.
