Fortnite Has Over 40 Million Players, Has Achieved 2 Million Concurrent Users, More

PCGamesN has the story.

Quote:
Another month, another 10 million. Fortnite's growth has been incredible since launching its free-to-play battle royale mode.

"We're just absolutely floored," Fortnite's lead systems designer, Eric Williamson, says.

Epic also told us that Fortnite's peak concurrents also hit a new high of 2 million.

"We're really thrilled by the excitement for Battle Royale," Williamson told us over Skype. "At the same time we see it as a challenge to continue iterating and improving our game. We've been releasing a lot of updates, almost every week really, to improve the core game and add new gameplay affecting stuff. We don't really have any intention of slowing down there."

The news comes as Epic reveal plans to release a major overhaul to the Battle Royale map later this week.

Not a fan of this battle royale genre but I will say this, Fortnite was a lot more fun than that other garbage game PUBG. Fortnite w/ a squad is really fun!

Cliffy B. leaves Epic Games and they release their biggest game ever. How's Cliffy's game doing again?

LOL. Good point. Lawbreakers released, but no one would now. On the other hand, Fortnite has been around since 2011, so I'm not sure why they waited so long to release it. Regardless, Cliffy hasn't been anything since Gears, which is sad. Maybe he is working on Jazz Jack Rabbit 3, who knows?

Cliff was at Epic when the first iterations of Fortnite were around. Fortnite BR was an afterthought Epic added (much like King of the Kill was for H1Z1 Just Survive) when they saw how popular BR games like King of the Kill and PUBG were.

They did it fast and only NOW is it grabbing players. The survival portion of Fortnite, much like the survival part of H1Z1 seems to be atrophying thanks to the popularity of BR.

Fortnite regular is co-op PvE game with character persistence and different maps with objectives. You pick one of the 4 hero types (Soldier, Ninja, Constructor, or Outlander) launch into a map with 3 other players, complete the objectives by building your fort and fighting off the NPC "husks" (zombies) then collect experience and loot at the end to level up your character. Hopefully you level and get upgraded loot.

Each hero type not only has a general focus but within each family there are other specialties, like a grenadier Soldier.

You get to save survivors who you can assign to spots in your own meta base which helps your power level. You can find all sorts of items or schematics which let you forever make that specific items (unless you scrap the schematic) assuming you can get the materials. Fortunately in the PvE side materials carry over.

Heroes, survivors, schematics for traps, weapons, and just about everything else can be leveled all the way from 1 to 5 stars and is available from common to Mythic quality or can be upgraded through those ranks.

Honestly the PvE game is a good building game shackled with an overly complex headache inducing, soul-sucking meta which requires 5 minutes of boredom and fighting with the UI and systems for every one minute of actual fun. So much so that after I dropped $300 on the grand high awesome version of the game I don't even log in.

It feels like actual work to sort your stuff out, collect your research, assign out your search squads, check out your daily quests, open any loot and make sure to allocate anything extra to the collection or replace anything you need to in various squads or defenders or whatever. The information delivered by the game is either non-existant or is 180 degrees and utterly patronizing. Then with all that lead up done (which could take 10 to 15 minutes or much longer depending on how backed up you are), you get to play which is fun as heck for about 30 minutes assuming you get a good party. If you get asshats it is painful as hell. Then you get loot and have to deal with it eventually. If you don't take care of it right away it just piles up as something you'll eventually have to deal with, like a shitty chore.

Battle Royale is just 1 vs. 100 people jumping into a map, crafting or finding shit to kill each other. Full PvP.
