Report: EA Vancouver Was Working On A Cancelled Plants Vs. Zombies Game

Game Informer has the story.

Quote:
EA Vancouver is EA's oldest and biggest studio, so they're often called in for mercenary work on other EA titles. Vancouver had reportedly been working on an unnamed Plants vs. Zombies title that was cancelled, either because it was not shaping up or to prepare the studio for taking over Visceral's Star Wars title. It is unlikely that this game was a sequel to the Garden Warfare, which was developed by different studios including Popcap themselves.

EA hasn't announced anything in the Plants vs. Zombies series since Garden Warfare 2 came out in early 2016. EA Vancouver is currently working on an unnamed Star Wars title that has been delayed from its intended 2018 schedule. Despite EA's exclusivity of Star Wars console games, only Battlefront has been released since the deal was announced in 2013.

Plants vs. Zombies isn't rocket surgery. How they could fuck that franchise up any more than they did after adding microtransactions and not be able to release new editions is beyond me.

"It is unlikely that this game was a sequel to the Garden Warfare, which was developed by different studios including Popcap themselves." I think this is Cytogenesis. One of the first articles on the topic speculated that the cancelled PVZ game was not GW3. BUT, if you read the Ragtag-demise article carefully, it clearly expresses that EA brought a PVZ team in to take over and make topline production calls on Ragtag.

Now let's think about that for a minute. An EA producer is going to rescue a 3d, 3rd person action shooter game by bringing in a new team to call the shots. A mobile team is NOT going to be able to do effective shot calling on that. No way.

...It has to be a team that has done spectacular work in a 3d 3rd person FPS. There is no other PVZ team that has the street cred to take over from Visceral management in that capacity.

Example:
"You guys are having trouble doing a 3rd person shooter. We're bringing in some AllStars to help you out"
"What game have they done?"
"A PVZ mobile game"
----------------------------
No way.

Example:
"You guys are having trouble doing a 3rd person shooter. We're bringing in some AllStars to help you out"
"What game have they done?"
"PVZGW /GW2"
----------------------------
"ok"

Bottom line: It is VERY LIKELY that the team brought in was the GW team. Maybe they put GW "on hold" (for 2 years) to take over Star Wars. I mean that kinda makes sense as a producer. PVZ is a wholly owned IP, while Star Wars is under license. So they need to ship something to profit off their contract.
