The Spawn Movie Will Be More R-Rated Than Deadpool, Creator Says

GameSpot has the story.

Quote:
Comic book legend and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been trying to get a new movie version of his demonic anti-hero into production for some time. Last year, it was reported that Blumhouse Film, the producers of such hits as Get Out and Split, would produce the movie. The film has yet to start shooting, but McFarlane has further hinted at what fans can expect from it.

Speaking at the ACE Comic-Con, McFarlane explained that his movie would be very different from other recent R-rated comic book adaptations. "It's funny in Hollywood, if you say you want to do an R-rated movie, they go like 'Oh like Deadpool and like Logan?'" he said, via The Playlist. "For me, no. Deadpool, to me, was a PG-13 action movie. It just had some naked butts and a couple f-bombs. Other than that, I thought it was the same PG-13 formula.

"I'm talking R. I'm talking that there will not be a lot of fun, there will not be any stupid lines in it. I never like my hero to make a joke right when the jeopardy was at its highest. I felt that if my hero wasn't afraid right now, why should I be? I want my heroes to go 'S**t, what do I do now?'"

So, it this going to be rated Mega-R?

What an empty, pointless statement.

Yeah because fuck those people who go to movies to have fun, annoying self-serving assholes! How dare they! /sarcasm

But seriously, more R rated? Is that a thing now?

To me, he means darker and grittier like the comics and HBO series. I'm fine with that. We're long overdue for a Spawn reboot (even though I refuse to count the first movie, outside of the soundtrack). I'd like a break from the MCU formula, and DC cinematic failboat.

I just think if he tries to go too hard-R, the studio/producers will push back a lot. Also, last I heard, he was trying to ensure he was signed on as the director. Yeesh.

I don't care how I get it as long as it is good and the spawn that we deserve because he is a badass character.

Oh please oh please, nothing about spawn is PC...you can't possibly make a spawn movie that's PC.....I see it being unfuck-up-able if they even HALF base it on the source material.

Well, it's certainly going to be unlike any of the current crop of superhero movies; Spawn reportedly won't talk and is effectively a background character in his own movie. He's making more of a "supernatural thriller" and people are speculating that it will end up being more of a Sam and Twitch movie than anything else.

I, for one, would want to see Spawn if I went to a Spawn movie...but, that's just me. McFarlane is paying for the movie with his own money, so he can do whatever the hell he wants.

I may be the only person who liked the spawn movie. Yeah, the HBO show was better. But, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. Leguizamo as the violator was pretty fun.

I agree with his assessment of Deadpool. It wasn't so much adult as it was just vulgar. So he was right in that it was the PG13 formula but more so. Spawn is an inherently darker property so I don't blame him for not wanting it to be another Deadpool. Hopefully they can do Spawn right but I'm not really counting on it. I liked it at the time but when I read the comic early on, I thought it was cool. Now I think it aged a little poorly.

More R-rated as in the delivery of the content, not in terms of rating. So characters who behave more believably and a story that does not follow the same beats we have become accustomed to with super hero movies.

He's essentially treating it as a horror movie with Spawn as the "killer"; he's not the primary character and won't speak.

Or he should shop it as a HBO series, I would like that a lot more than a movie.

Im having a hard time taking McFarlane seriously when Spawn was just patently ridiculous. But I think I know where hes coming from.

Spawn is stupid, but its a very different kind of stupid than the current Marvel films, and even Deadpool.

McFarlane has always been full of himself but maybe for good reason. He's one of the first to strike out with a successful franchise and make it big, big, BIG! from Marvel and DC.

But I never found his stuff to be terribly sophisticated. I think for him "R" rated is going to be more of the Direct to Video HellRazier at best but more likely shocking torture porn level gruesome.

It isn't going to be mentally stimulating like psychological torture from Event Horizon or hilarious like Deadpool. It's going to be torture porn level with lots of blood and shock kills like body parts ripped off, souls being forcibly extracted and sent to some messy area in the background where the bad guy will tell us it will rest for eternity with XYZ punishment.

There will be pools of blood around everywhere and screaming bodies impaled on spikes just for having pools of blood, impaled bodies, and screaming doomed souls. If he can think of something that can shock sensibilities he'll consider adding it in.

Sounds great, actually.

The odds that I would actually go see something like that is slim to none, but Id love it to exist.

I want my 90s back.

Todd is writing this and if we know anything about Todd's writing it's about as good as Liefield's ability to draw ankles and wrists.
