I'd first like to say I'm sorry for no update last week. Life has been busy for me, but that said I did spend eight hours working on the game over the last two days. I don't have a lot of screen shots to show, nor any video because I've broken most of the code as I continue to tweak certain areas of the engine.

The fun of poking data into RAM! Most of the FOR loops in the above code are used a a delay, so I can see what's happening (I miss modern break points). While not represented in the code above, I also use a lot of Temp PRINT statements to see if values == what they should.

Over the last couple of days I've been working on using more POKEs to speed up drawing parts of the screen. For example, during a battle the screen changes to show you, and your foe. When either you or the monster damages one another I'd like to change the border around the character, or monster's info box to flash between its normal color and red. This will be a nice visual clue that you or the monster have done damage (beyond the text updating).

I've also spent some time looking at the SID documentation. The SID chip is the magic that makes the Commodore 64 music and sound. Don't expect music in the game, but I would love to add some sound effects to the game. That being said, sound is not in the current scope of the project, but I love scope creep

This has been a labor of love so far. It's hard to go back to a language I haven't used for decades. It would be a little easier if I could work on it daily, but that's not the case. So, every weekend I look at my half-assed notes, and try to figure out what the hell I was trying to do the week before

Look for another update next week (time permitting).

I eagerly anticipate the eager anticipation of others, since I can't stand playing old games any more, no matter how much I pretend my backlog will eventually be addressed.

Keep up the great work!

You know, you could have just started with open source NetHack as your foundation and done a completely awesome re-write with original story, original tile graphics, custom sounds, etc and other tweaks. But yeah OK, not the same concept as a text adventure.

Try to include some humorous response options. Zork was always full of those, especially Zork Zero. My favorite text adventures actually had static graphics in bits, like Zork Zero and Arthur: Quest for Excalbur, which were my favorite text adventures growing up!

1989 says hello. 1989 was the BEST year for text adventures, where Infocom was at the top of their game before folding. Both my above examples were released in 1989.

I had a single error when I tried to compile and thought I knew the problem immediately. My solution produced hundreds of lines of errors at that point, which made my wife laugh uncontrollably. I can remember giving her a death stare and kicking her out of my computer lab. I still can't believe that 1) I did that and 2) She complied. It must have been quite a look.
