Weekend Gamer: What are you playing?

It is the important time to ask the question: Should I do schoolwork or play a game? I know the best answer is work, but... What are you playing this weekend?

Progress in Horizon Zero Dawn. Loving it so far.

I feel that I'm close to finishing Senua's Sacrifice. I should be able to wrap that up this weekend.

Finishing off Uncharted: Lost Legacy and then playing more Overwatch before the event is over. So far, my drops from these Summer Games have been shit with only two golds (one was 500 gold - fucking useless since event skins are 3000 gold - and the other was the BMX outfit for Reaper), so I am hoping for one more before the event is over (really want the Soldier 76 skin, but also Widow Maker as well - despite me never using her. Just love the look).

I finished my first playthrough of Nier: Automata; and instantly started a second game. So good. I plan on some PUBG with my bros and hos; with board games and buds later.

Neir: Automata does not really start to make its most emotional sense until the third playthrough. But there are some unique perspectives with 9S (the beginning with the robot trying to revive his brother with oil is goddamn genius) which make the second playthrough worthwhile, despite the use of hacking as your primary method for defeating tough enemies.

I'll be playing in a poker tournament before the Mayweather/McGregor fight tomorrow, aside from that, I picked up Quake Champions, playing Pubg of course, and have been playing some Halo Master Chief Collection as well.

Rented Uncharted: Lost Legacy so I can blow through that this weekend. Got in the COD WW2 Beta via Comcast (thanks Comcast?). Otherwise I don't play much in the way of games during the summer. First time really gaming in a month or so.

It has been the Commodore 64 for me all week. I may move on to the Apple IIgs at some point this weekend.

I've been messing around with some old games, but more so I've been doing some old BASIC programming on them. I've been playing around with building an old text adventure.

God I do not miss line numbers!!!

Absolutely fantastic news out of Japan today: The developers behind the Yakuza series are working on a Fist of the North Star game.

Watch the absolutely bonkers transition from Yakuza to Fist of the North Star:

Then watch the full trailer

I split my days off between Heroes of the Storm and Injustice 2. Injustice 2 does look a ton better than it does in the screenshots. It is hard to imagine why they released so many crappy looking screenshots when there is a plethora of in-engine cut scenes they could have been drawing from.

I really like the story and the fact that it centers around Supergirl. I've been in the mood for Supergirl stuff for a few months because I re-visited the brief run DC did where Supergirl was in the Legion of Super Heroes. I don't really watch the Supergirl TV show, it seems decent but the acting of everyone except Supergirl herself is pretty bad and the plot is pretty stupid ( that whole thing with the Alien hunting agency is just tacked on and lame, she can hunt super villains all on her own without some weird SHIELD knock-off, I guess just comes from Supergirl coming out after Agents of Shield.)

I played through the entire single player story, but they make you go back and pick the characters you didn't pick to unlock the last 4 or 5 story chapters and the alternate ending chapter.

I did a bunch of the multiverse stuff too, that is a nice addition. Gives you an excuse to just fight a bunch of battles instead of just doing dozens of 1 on 1 battles vs the AI.

I mostly mash buttons, so I don't think I'll spend any time with the multiplayer. I'm just not that good.

I did that all the time back in the day. That's how I learned to program, from getting those old game books. I even had some published in one book.

Here's an old game of mine called "Bounty Hunter" that I later added graphics to and published in Big Blue Disk (as "Western") a looooooong time ago.

Thanks for the share!
Yes, back in 1984 (the year I got my C-64) I played around with the the owners manual (had a bunch of BASIC programs in the back). That got me started in programming, and later a career as a software engineer.

Same year I got mine.

What were the old magazines that would have page upon page of BASIC code for you to copy? Each month I would sit there for hours on my Commodore64 typing it in before executing the code. Had a blast going back and learning how everything worked, modifying the code, and eventually making my own games.

If only I had taken a greater interest in the coding than the games themselves!
