Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence is scheduled to hit the coast of North Carolina on Thursday (9/13) or maybe very early Friday. This one is taking around the same path as Fran did back in the mid-90's. I was here (in Raleigh) for Fran. Being in the middle of the state, I didn't think it would be as bad but it was terrible. Trees and limbs down everywhere, massive flooding, power was out for at least a week. Up to a month in some areas. My parents live up in the mountains of SW Virginia (go Hokies) and they had trees knocked down way up there. This storm is supposed to be stronger.

I just got back from BJs price warehouse. No water or bread anywhere, and it's just Monday. People are taking this seriously. I also saw people walking out of BJ's with carts full of these cases of gallon jugs of water. 3-4 cases per person. I only took one case, but it went fast due to the people hoarding and a lot of people didn't get any.

I think I'm in the pro-scalping camp. With scalping it would be more expensive, but at least everybody would have a chance at supplies. Right now only a few people are going to have them.

Best of luck Pacer and everyone down there. If you think of it, post once it passes to give us all a status.

I'm preparing by doing nothing. Yes, I'm in the path. I'm meditating to pass the time.

I'm icing some Guinness in preparation for a loss of power. I plan to watch the fireworks as nearby transformers explode. I'm also gassing up the pickup so we can go mudding, lol.

Unless you're closer to the outskirts of it's impact area, I sincerely hope you're doing more than that.

I mean, sure, you're a dickhead...but I don't want you to die.

Thursday, 9/13

Florence is expected to turn slightly to the south. Raleigh is no longer in the direct path, but you never know. It's also weakening as it gets closer to shore (it's already weakened to a cat 2). Praying does work.

I'm still fully expecting flooding and to lose power and I am still going to be securing everything around my house. I need to call DirectTV and see what we can do about the dish on the roof.

I have been so worried about this it's literally making me ill. Now I feel a little better for myself but I am still worried, though now it's more about my neighbors to the south.

The strange thing is... the storm stopped aiming directly for Raleigh, and now it's going to go in a big circle around it. Literally. Look at the image above, it's suddenly going to veer to the left and move in a big arc around Raleigh. Almost like something is making it go around rather than through.

Whichever Raleigh resident got the force field technology working at the last minute, I salute you.

Terran, it sounds like you are going to be closer to the impact than I am. Let me know if I can be of any help afterward if you need it.

I'm right in the damn thick of it but not worried. I'm on high ground and been through worse storms (2015 rainstorm here was literally biblical and nobody seemed to care in the run-up to that one; bridges and buildings all washed out around here, still see some of them busted up and unrepaired). Made a trip to the grocery store to grab some more beer to ride it out (Guinness Stout is my weakness; I love that stuff). We'll be fine. If I don't post again afterwards, I went down with a brew and my gal, no regrets.

If I'm going to lose power, though, I'd better die first. I hate losing power. I'll spend the weekend planning my trip out west next year. Heading to the Grand Canyon (etc), Yellowstone (etc) and Mount Rushmore. AirBnB reservations engaged!

Maybe it’s too late now, but you guys should really evacuate. It’s just not worth the risk, I lived in New Orleans for Katrina and evacuating was probably one of the best decisions I ever made.

Do you really want to live through your own little post apocalyptic nightmare when you could just spend a day driving and be in a hotel room with tv, electricity, internet vs huddling on your roof praying a helicopter comes so you don’t drown?

5 people dead already, including a woman and her 8th month old child after a tree fell on their house. The father survived, but was sent to the hospital. I cannot even begin to imagine what he is going through.

So far in the Raleigh area we have gotten some wind, but mostly rain. I had to go out today to get some medicine for my wife. Barely any cars on the roads. It didn't look like it was much at first glance, but wind gusts and pooling water on the roads made driving very treacherous. I won't be doing that again any time soon. I walked my dogs tonight and the sidewalks were small rivers.

With the storm rotating around central Carolina, that area is going to get most of the rainfall so I still expect a lot of flooding.

We need something to laugh at. Like a guy from the Weather Channel barely able to stand in the wind while two guys in the background casually stroll by.

Good Lord are they trying to fake weather conditions now too?

We started feeling wind effects early last night. It's pretty remarkable how strong even a "tropical storm' can be (it's no longer a hurricane at this point). Gusts to 50 mph. I found myself checking on a few trees around my house and the kids slept in the main room rather than the second floor as a precaution against a tree fall.

The stupid storm is moving so slowly we'll be stuck in this garbage for the next 24 to 36 hours. Not as much rain as 2015 for us, but the rain combined with the wind is a bit of a mess. Now if I had been at the coast, I'd have evacuated my family in a heartbeat. We'll ride it out okay here. Loss of power is still a possibility with all the wind.

Stay safe, Carolinas folks!
