Red Dead Redemption 2 Hands-On Impressions

vg247.com

Quote:
Straight away, the attention to detail is striking. Red Dead Redemption looked phenomenal at the time of release, but it seems barren and flat in comparison to RDR 2’s world. There’s varied topography everywhere you look, landmarks pepper the horizon, and the world feels alive. Rabbits scarper out from bushes, birds soar overhead, and the wind sees snow swirl through the air like dust. The snow, Dutch’s jacket, the horses’ tails, and the little string tied around Arthur’s hat are all physically simulated. The Rockstar reps tell us each tree in the map was individually placed. We believe them.

It’s a relatively minor change amidst the scale of this game, but Red Dead 2’s option to name your horse speaks to the bond the developers feel you should have with yours. Every breed has different strengths and weaknesses, acts as an overflow inventory for anything Arthur can’t carry, even becomes a lost-and-found (if Arthur loses his hat or gets disarmed, the dropped item will reappear in the saddle). You’ll be relying on your animal - and the better you treat it, the better it’ll treat you. Feeding and grooming your horse builds its level of affection towards you, governing whether they’ll respond to your whistles, if they’ll buck at gunfire, even whether they can perform dressage.

After a long ride out to a location within a forest, the four men approach the rival camp quietly. A nearby patrol stops to let one of its members relieve himself, and again we were given the option to send in Bill to take care of things or do it ourselves. Unfortunately, our stealth takedowns attracted too much attention from the rest of the patrol, and we quickly took cover in the trees and used a mix of pistols, rifles, and our bow to thin out the defending force. Red Dead Redemption 2 still features a similar kind of auto-aim assistance to the previous game, whereby zooming in with the left shoulder button will snap your cursor to an enemy--helpful because we found bodies hard to make out amongst the forests' dense foliage, and we didn't have a scoped weapon. We were reminded again how familiar shooting felt to Red Dead Redemption, but it was nonetheless still satisfying to confidently line up a string of headshots with the bow using Dead Eye.
Polygon.com

Quote:
Red Dead Redemption 2 uses a weapon system that’s similar to that of Rockstar’s Max Payne 3. Arthur can carry a maximum of two one-handed weapons and two long weapons (two rifles, or a rifle and his bow). He also packs his hunting knife, a lasso and throwable weapons such as, well, throwing knives. All of this is controlled by a weapon wheel, although dual-wielding is a skill you have to unlock. You hit L1 to pull out or put away your weapon, and of course, it may be wise to keep your gun holstered when talking to people.
An interesting take-away from these hands-on previews is that you can also play the game in first-person mode.

I'm not sure if that is a good thing. I haven't seen a game yet that had both 1st and 3rd person mode and both worked well. Usually a game is designed for one of the modes, and the second one is tacked on and doesn't play as well.

For example, I was excited when 1st person was added to GTA V, but it plays like crap compared to 3rd person so I rarely use it. Especially when driving (which is where I really wanted it) as you can barely see the road in front of you over the dash board.

They aren't really reviews, just some hands-on impressions.

As much as the impressions may try, I couldn't get more hyped for this title if I tried. Loved the first game to death, and am hoping/praying that this one lives up to the name. Thankfully this reads as if it will...

Yeah, but they're clearly bought and paid for positive impressions for a game everyone knows is most likely going to be a GotY contender.

It'll look better on the One X, but it'll likely play exactly the same on both.

Seeing as how I don't have a One X, I'm buying the PS4 version. If I had both a Pro and a One X...I'd probably opt for the Xbox version.

It will look the exact same on both, it uses the exact same art assets for both and runs at a resolution and with features that are virtually identical.

I don't think you can definitively say that, especially since the Pro isn't displaying it at 4k at all. The only footage we've seen is from the Pro and since the One X is objectively more powerful, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it end up as the visually superior version.

If we go back a generation, RDR used the same exact art assets for both the 360 and PS3 versions while running at the same resolution...and the 360 version looked better, for a variety of reasons. So, differences can - and likely will - be found between the two versions of RDR2.

Time will, of course, tell.

Even if you use the same assets, adaptive resolution or higher resolution native resolution will increase the fidelity of the Xbox One X over the PS4 Pro. I would not be surprised if this is similar to the performance and picture quality difference between the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro from Far Cry 5.

The only ones that always come to mind as great are the Jedi Knight games. I guess you can count Fallout 3/New Vegas/Fallout 4 and Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim if you tolerate the shitty combat mechanics built into the series' broken foundations. No Man's Sky recently patched an optional third person mode and it works well. I'm playing Witcher 3 with a default first person camera that automatically switches to third while in combat and it's pretty cool. Any racing game I must play in first person. Behind view makes no sense to me in high speed and isn't as accurate. But millions of people prefer it that weird way. Meanwhile car combat games like Carmageddon and Mad Max are better in behind view and designed for it even though they allow "cockpit" mode.

RDR was an amazing game and easily a top ten of all time for me personally. My only complaint, a big one, is that controlling the character is like guiding a drunk elephant. Tighten that shit up!

The cars in GTA have always had the same problem. It is shocking that GTA is as popular as it is considering how poor the vehicle controls have always been.

Or how poor the series plays in general.

If someone is planning to go deep on the online, I would pick the console with all your pals, otherwise Xbox One X will probably be the platform to play it on performance wise.

Yeah, no. Those assets have to be rendered by hardware, so there is going to be a difference since the PS4 version will more than likely have a shorter draw distance and lower anisotropic filtering among other things. They have already confirmed the PS4 Pro version is sub-4k, for example.
