Metal Gear Survive Charges Money For Extra Save Slots

Konami is wasting no time running the Metal Gear franchise into the ground, while Hideo Kojima is "on vacation." PC Gamer has the story.

Quote:
In an unusual move, Metal Gear Survive charges its players for extra save slots. First noticed on reddit and verified by us, if you want to create a new save slot beyond the first, you'll need to fork out "1000 SV Coins". SV Coins are an in-game currency which can only be purchased with real money.

Basically, once the 'New Game' option is clicked, and assuming one save game already exists, you'll be met with this message:

At the time of writing the cost of 1150 SV Coins is US$9.99. Meanwhile, 30 SV Coins are currently gifted with every daily login. Here's the full breakdown of ways to acquire these coins:
  • 100 SV coins - $0.99
  • 550 SV coins - $4.99
  • 1150 SV coins - $9.99
  • 3500 SV coins - $29.99
  • 6000 SV coins - $49.99
You'll note that "playing the game" isn't among these options, because it isn't an option. Aside from the log-in bonuses, SV Coins can only be acquired with real world money. Which means, if you happened to want two characters on the go in MGS, then you have to pay up.
Thanks, Mix-Master!

If you paid real money for this game you get what you deserve.

Is it a F2P title? If so, what would one expect? If it's a paid title, that's pretty freaking stupid.

That's fucking hilarious. Ten years ago I imagine such a thing among a list of impossibly stupid potential future DLC offers. Here we are.

The retail price is $40.

Konami, bridging the gap between console game and shitty F2P smartphone app.

As much as I love this medium, I'm really starting to not like the industry.

Common on Kanami. At least MMOs have the decency to allow for 3 characters to be created before charging for additional player slots.

I played quite a bit of let it die... This game was a current day arcade game. The difficulty was brutal, but unfair, forcing you to eventually start feeding it money.

It's too bad. I wonder how many games will be ruined in this way this generation.

Yet another depressing sign of the times in gaming. This is my hobby - playing video games across multiple platforms is what I do to relax and unwind. Between this era of "loot crate" craziness and now charging for features that should be a default inclusion in any "production" release, this nickel and dime shit is not good for the consumer. Of course, the game companies are finding a new revenue stream that they are making bank on, and I can't blame them - capitalism at its best. Things were so much simpler with physical media and actual "complete" games, but if people keep buying, I can only blame the same consumer that suffers from these practices as being the cause for a propensity to keep it accelerating as a practice.

Yah, until gamers practice self-control, it'll only continue to escalate. Reject bad ideas by not buying them.

I'll just wait for Death Stranding, because Metal Gear is dead.

I played a few rounds of this in the beta and it’s the same game as Fortnite - at double the cost - and without any of the building features that make Fortnite cool.

Fortnite is still a major grind, you can only carry 999 of each resource at a time and having to shuttle 999 of each item back to your base, do construction, then go back into a mission to gather 999 more is like the worst bits of MMO’s, but the game is still priced right (I think it is on sale for $25 right now) and the PvP mode is free.

And what is more, right now you can earn the Vbucks, the cash currency, in Fortnite by playing the single player missions. (No idea if you can earn them in PvP, I don’t play that mode.)

I have almost 1,000 VBucks, which is what it costs for each season’s Season Pass, after only 1 day of playing. In another day I would have over 1,000 and could get everything the Season 3 season pass offers for free.

That’s how you do these games, you make it so people can pay cash if they want to or can just grind for a short period.

I think this game will end up being a flop. It just isn’t that interesting to start with.

And I will add that if I hadn’t spent half the day yesterday playing Heroes of the Storm, I would have over 1,000 Vbucks. I think I’m about done with Heroes. The ranked mode is just terrible, it’s all trolls, toxic assholes and people who just plain don’t care about the objectives.

It’s always one step forward and two steps back. I enjoy the game, but it is starting to feel like there is no way to advance without a dedicated team. Either I need to team up with some really great guys or just move on to something else.

That's a new low. Following this branch of evolution, we'll end up being charged bucks for restarting when dying in home machine games. Not unlike the old arcade adage "Continue?" I suppose, but I thought we shed that skin.

Video games are following the airline industry-- unbundling everything you thought came in one price, and charging for it separately.

Soon we'll be watching ads with every restart. Just a few seconds at first...

In response to outrage:
"We're doing it this way because we're poor starving devs and publishers and we just need to feed our families. It's also about player "choice!" and player "freedom!"."

Gaming community outraged for a week, then accepts happily because a game following this model was hyped heavily and looks shiny, and they don't want to miss playing the game.
