RetroN 77 REVIEW - Pros & Cons + Gameplay

The first in-depth review of Hyperkin's RetroN 77 Atari 2600 HD clone system. The things I love about it...and things that need a bit more work!

PROS:
Runs real 2600 cartridges (approx 99% compatibility)
720P HD output
Supports original Atari joysticks and paddles
Toggle 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio
Super long controller cable
Looks nice

CONS:
Joystick may break during heavy use
Doesn't support more than 18 ROMS
Slight video/audio lag because of software emulation

I have an old shoebox full of 2600 cartridges in a closet somewhere, I think, left over from when I had the original as a kid back in the day. New console looks fun, but I'm really not that into retro gaming any more. Good to know there is a machine with HDMI hookups instead of having to kludge those RCA switch boxes with forked wires like we used to.

My friend Kelsey with her two Pink Gorilla retro stores in Seattle can't really give away Atari 2600 games (or Intellivision/7800/5200/etc)...so the audience for this system is very small. I got the feeling even Hyperkin understands this may end up being a small run...

Yep, If you like the 2600, you probably already have a real working one, or one of the many Flash Back systems. Still, it's nice to see some Atari love.

If you're really looking for a version with home computer emulation: The C64 Mini was just released in Europe. Apparently, it's held back by a crappy joystick, but if I understand correctly, the thing really emulates a C64, so if you're into typing listings for hours, you can plug in a USB keyboard and travel back in time.

I spent a large chunk of my weekend coding on a real C-64

Well at least it's consistent with the old frustrating 2600 controller, complete with the loud click. I hope they get it fixed up for you.

I was thinking about this too, about the market for Atari 2600 games. My local store has tons of carts available as well but they are mostly the boring games - NOT the "must haves".

And at the same time, the Atari Flashback (all models) sell well on Amazon and at Walmart/Target - so there IS a market for this.

Maybe if someone you know with a YouTube channel was *really* into sharing his/her love about retro gaming would do a "Top 10 or even 20 Must Have Games for the Atari 2600" (and help drive up the value of those games too ) then maybe that would be enough to help kickstart the second coming (ok, the 18th) of the console that just won't die.

I wonder what the market actually is for that stuff though. The only people I know who have a Flashback are my folks and my in-laws who got it for nostalgia and so the grandkids can all play it once in a while. I don't know any "gamers" who bought one.

Yep, in fact coding that machine has become my new digital crack! It's weird going back. Line numbers, and no do/while loops, or select case/switch statements. Only 40 columns lines with a max of 80 columns per line number.

BTW this is the same C-64 my grandparents gave me for Christmas in 1984.

Amazon is a pretty good indicator of how popular a product is based on its sales. The Atari Flashback 8 Gold Console HD is currently #658 in Video Games - that number will fluctuate throughout the hour/day/week/month.

Being under #1000 in certain verticals on Amazon is considered *very* good. Sure, it doesn't tell us how big that is, but it's a solid position.

AtGames has been making these consoles for a decade+ so, that too is a decent indicator that there is demand.

I think the core audience for this is retrogamers with the bulk of the sales happening to those who love nostalgia and are probably over 45 to 50.
