HTC: Why Vive Will Beat #Oculus VR at Its Own Game #HTCVive #VR #gaming

Via Tom's Guide:

Quote:
I've tried a bunch of virtual reality headsets, from the Oculus Rift to the Gear VR, but there's nothing like the HTC Vive. I demoed HTC's virtual reality headset for the first time this week, and thanks to the headset's room-scaling capability, I could walk around underwater while getting up close and personal with a whale, peek around the painting I just made in midair with two motion-tracked controllers, and fix a broken robot by pulling all sorts of levers.

Jeff Gattis, HTC's executive director for marketing and emerging devices, is banking on this unique room-scaling and location-tracking feature as a "huge differentiator" to beat Oculus in the minds of shoppers. HTC also happens to have a first-mover advantage, as its PC-powered device will hit the market this holiday season; the Rift won't debut until 2016. (Pricing and other details for the Vive will be announced in October.) But will the Vive offer enough to win over early adopters?

I sat down with Gattis to talk about the VR competition, why HTC's partnership with Valve is so critical and where virtual reality is going. For Gattis, live-action capture will open up a whole new world of possibilities, putting you behind home plate at Yankee Stadium or in the middle of a concert as it's happening. And he said he thinks it will happen sooner than five years.

Every spec and comparison I've read puts the Vive ahead of the OR. The only thing I've seen that puts the Rift ahead is notoriety, which is important for adoption and compatibility. Of course, with Valve behind the Vive one would think they would be successful making the unit work with as many games on their ecosystem as possible. Facebook can't force that issue as well, long term, without just buying developer preference.

Vive is the only one I care about but from what I see of how developers are utilizing the technology I'm prepared to be completely underwhelmed. Palmer Luckey shot himself in the foot being cocky and selling out while wearing his hippy sandals that didn't help to protect him. The Facebook acquisition completely tainted their image for a large portion of the potential user base on top of any other concerns over hardware or software.

Indeed. The race isn't won by the best, it's won by the one that is the most supported.

Something that, as I noted, Valve has the ability to enact.

I do not care about Facebook or Valve. I will buy the VR headset which works the best and MOST IMPOTANTLY has support by the games which I want to play.

I do not care about the company. The product use in games is what will determine which product is the best seller.
