I joined the USAF as a direct result of Top Gun and Iron Eagle. I was JUST the right age to be majorly influenced by these two movies (8yo).

It stuck with me for years because in the 90's the Discovery Channel came out with Wings.

I hope we influence a whole new generation of kids to look to the skies with this movie!

*that was ultra corny but IDGAF.

*edit, I guess Wings was started in 88

I joined the Navy to get away from guys who saw too much Top Gun.

(I didn't really join the Navy, I did talk to the recruiter. They were basically flooded with people after Top Gun and didn't have much interest in signing people up. The Marines though... those guys wanted me bad because of my scores. Didn't join. Oh well, it's easy to be young and dumb.)

Too bad "Iceman" is too fat (and crazy) fit in a plane anymore.

I was also influenced by Top Gun. I had the ASVAB scores off the charts but not the vision so instead of going to college and bucking for pilot I settled a trade and for working on the airplanes instead.

Was awesome. If I hadn't gotten into computers and making 5x the money in the private sector I might have considered joining the Army when they offered me Warrant Officer and Helicopter Pilot when I was done with the Air Force (which you could do with less than perfect vision back then). Also, I would have had to go back to Basic Training. I don't know if I would have been a good trainee considering I would know all the tricks behind how the Drill Sgts motivate and scare the kids in Basic Training. It wouldn't have worked a second time on me.

One more thing, I cannot WAIT to get this in 4k @ home, even though I plan on seeing it in the theatre.

I can't explain to someone who hasn't realized their boyhood dream, but it is ONE OF my greatest memories. Sitting in Saudi Arabia under the wing of my jet, an F-15c Fighting Eagle (0029), reading a book and lost in the heat. I'll never forget it.

This was MY jet for awhile.

It was an honor.

I hope we don't see a F22 with 4 support fighter drones in formations... It would be a slap in the face for future kids that want to fly :/

I find it both refreshing and a little disappointing that they seem to be only flying "old" planes. Maybe I'm spoiled by the last few "Ace Combat" games, which use the F-18 as a mere stepping stone towards the newer and (in game terms) better planes, but I find it just not that exciting visually.

Oh well, at least it'll bring back long-forgotten memories of old Amiga flight simulators like "F/A-18 Interceptor" (complete with stolen "Top Gun" intro music:-) or "Birds of Prey". And it sure is nice to see a glimpse of the iconic F-14 at the end!

Old planes are fucking beautiful... for me one of the top all time is the F-15E Strike Eagle. (Sorry for the size of the images)

What a fucking beauty.

I have to say that the F-22 and F-35 are also kissable

I was lucky enough to work on some of the beginning maintenance protocols for the F-22 while it was still in the testing phase as the YF-22. Awesome weapon system!

I was also one of the first Air Force line techs to get my hands on the C-17 because of my expertise at the time with airlift aircraft systems and Lockheed specifically. Airplanes are amazing beasts.

If not for the "old" planes, there is no point to this movie. It is meant to capture the nostalgia of those that saw the original... when it was new. That's why Tom Cruise is the headliner. A remake would feature Zac Efron as Maverick flying F-35's. They couldn't keep F-14's, as they are out of service, but the F-18's are the closest in age that took the interceptor role.
This is a nice contrast to the remake generation. It appears to be staying true to the original, and trying to continue the story decades later, rather than trying to rewrite it. It seems to me to be a much more genuine attempt to capitalize on nostalgia, and I welcome the attempt.

While I respect your opinion on matter, I feel obligated to inform you that the F/A-18E Super Hornet is the very plane God himself flies in. Sometimes he breaks out the F/A-18F when he wants to take Jr. along for a ride.

Maybe if he's feeling like going too fast enjoy seeing what he built. When he wants wants perfection he flies an A-10. It kills me they are still trying (against advice of the Army and most of the line in the Air Force) to retire them. They were a dream to work on.
