Uncharted 4 Tech Analysis: "A PS4 Masterpiece," Says Digital Foundry #Uncharted4

The Digital Foundry took a close look at Naughty Dog's new PS4 action game, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and came to the conclusion that it is "the technological powerhouse we've been waiting for."

Looks really cool. I like SP games a lot more, and can't wait to play this. Hopefully next week I can.

How is the game, Emab?

I decided to go for DOOM, so I'm stuck waiting till Friday. I got my shipping notice this morning.

It is an excellent game. Masterful story telling, and tight gameplay make it hard to stop playing. Easily the best console game of this generation.

I'm watching through it on Youtube. I'm a little over halfway done. I made the right decisions as the gameplay looks terrible, but the story is PHENOMENAL. The motivation for what gets Drake back into "the life" is compelling and legitimately makes you want to see what's next. The acting is phenomenal and the tech that drives the facial animations is unparalleled. I would even argue that it's above anything I've seen in a feature length 3d animated film. The script oftentimes RELIES on characters to convey key plot details or emotional moments with nothing more than facial expressions and 9.95 times out of 10 they nail it.

In a lot of ways it makes good on why CGI films can be better than live-action films in a genre that hasn't yet really had much exploration done by CGI films. Characters and moments can be fine-tuned down to the pixel.

Potentially the best thing about the story is the fact that it takes the question of the "ludonarrative dissonance" and how Drake can be a good person and murder up hundreds of people and basically settles it with, "oh, no, it was never a question. Nathan Drake is NOT a good person. He's charming and charismatic, but he's not a good person."

I could never get into the other Uncharted games. I own them all but something just turned me off after playing awhile.

However, I'm enjoying this quite a lot. Sometimes I'm reminded of TLOU for some reason, which is a good thing.

The only negative is that DOOM comes out Friday so I'll probably temporarily put this down in favor of that. But this game looks amazing and is really good so far.

Don't worry, the gameplay is not terrible. It's very much the same as the previous three titles in the series, with a few new moves. It's comparable to the recent Tomb Raider titles, but it's more challenging, with better gun play. The climbing is overused, but those parts are not overly long. The pacing feels good to me after four hours of play.

I'm a little over half way through Uncharted 2 and I hit yet another climbing part. I sighed a bit until Drake said "I'm so tired of climbing shit." under his breath. It brought a much needed bit of humor to a bleak part of the game.

Which is funny, as I would trade in all the combat for more climbing. I think it goes back to the original Tomb Raider or to my love of point and click adventure games.

Uncharted 4 is a bit of a slow burn at the moment (stopped at Chapter 10 last night). The beginning action sequence isn't as good as Uncharted 2 (though, to be honest, I don't think any game can truly capture the magic of the opening sequence) and beginning relies a lot more on cutscenes to establish the narrative for the game, rather than through gameplay like the previous titles. In a lot of ways, it is like Metal Gear Solid IV: the first fourth is tutorial for what you will be doing the rest of the game.

Even with the updated PS4 on the horizon I think I may have to finally breakdown and pick one up for this.

I feel like the original Tomb Raider relied far more on the player's input and judgement when dealing with the climbing elements. Uncharted's climbing, from what I played in 3 and what I see in 4, isn't really CHALLENGING, it's just busy-work. And if ever it presents itself as a challenge, it's just trying to figure out where the developers want you to go, and as such becomes annoying rather than feeling like a challenge.

And because the game is SO reliant on the flow and momentum of it's cinematic, every single time you fail it just feels like it's hurting the overall experience because the scene "broke"and now all the momentum is gone and probably won't ever be regained for that scene.

Yeah, I stopped playing when the title sequence rolled (which was after about an hour, I'd guess), and so far, the whole game was a rather annoying sequence of disconnected flashbacks and tutorials. Worse, there haven't been any memorable other characters so far, so there was little in the way of great dialogue. I'm really looking forward to seeing Sully again. You can always rely on him to lighten the mood!

All that said, I'm definitely playing "Uncharted" games for the story and the thrill of the moment ("Whew, I did it! I'm awesome!":-). I'm bad at shooting, and my obsessive search for hidden treasure and alternate routes sometimes makes me fail climbing passages that essentially are impossible to fail. The story and characters make it all worth it.

This game really is glorious to behold. I don't know what could be coming out in the near future that could trump this title in the visual dept on consoles. As their first full on PS4 title Naughty Dog really did an amazing job.

The game is much more like an 80's movie this time around, even more so than Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was when compared to Jewel of the Nile. So they spend a lot of the game establishing the characters so that the later portions of the game can concentrate more on the set pieces, banter, and bigger payoffs during story cutscenes and reveals.

I highly recommend pushing forward, as the game totally opens up a couple of chapters in.

Oh, I definitely will be playing this over the next weeks. I'm still trying to convince my brother to buy a PS4 (well, maybe a NEO), and he's coming for a visit soon. I figure "Uncharted 4" might be a good showcase to make my point...

Having seen the whole thing now, I feel like this is definitely a game that would benefit from playing it over a long period of time.

Honestly, I think maybe this game would even benefit highly from being released episodically.

As spectacular as it is to watch, the basica components of this game and equal parts climbing, hiding behind something and shooting, and Drake stepping on something that breaks and almost throws him off a cliff. Like, he almost goes off two dozen cliffs. That kind of thing is more silly when it's compounded into a short period of time.

I've been going through the first two games and about to start the third and I think people are forgetting that this is very much how the first two have been as well. It does get a bit repetitive and I see what people mean when they say it's almost less a game and more of a lightly interactive movie but it's still fun.
