John Cena in talks to star in Duke Nukem Movie

Quote:
John Cena in Talks to Star in 'Duke Nukem'

The wrestler-turned-actor is negotiations to star in Duke Nukem, a big-screen adaptation of the popular video game franchise featuring the politically incorrect action hero that is set up at Paramount.

Platinum Dunes, the company run by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, will produce the movie.

No director is on board at this stage. A search for a writer will begin soon to develop a script for what is intended to be a star vehicle for Cena.

The Nukem video games follow muscular adventures of its titular protagonist, who initially was a mash-up of action hero tropes. The muscular cigar-chomping figure has been fighting aliens in order to save planet Earth since 1991 when the first game was released.

The project was previously set up at Dimension Films although the rights lapsed. Paramount picked up the movie rights from Gearbox Software, the company behind the game.

Platinum Dunes is one of the companies behind The Purge action franchise and has produced the Ninja Turtles movies for Paramount. It next has the John Krasinski-directed horror movie A Quiet Place opening April 6.

Cena has quietly made Paramount his de facto movie home, having appeared in the studio’s Daddy Home 2, which has grossed over $100 million domestically, and is due to appear in Bumblebee, the studio’s Transformers spinoff that Bay produced.

A never-was actor for a has-been chararacter, seems like a perfect fit.

No.

This can only work if they spoof what the game was spoofing, which was 80s action movie stereotypes... or it will just come across as clueless and dumb.

Don't worry, Cena will kick-out of this. Cena kicks-out of everything.

John Cena is too good for a Duke film. He would have better luck doing Predator 5. Make it a predator reboot its been 31 years since the first one.

I don't see Cena in that role, but I've been wrong before. I would still rather see Bruce Campbell. Maybe an "Old Man Duke" or something, or flashing back to his younger days. That would be cool.

He didn't kick out of that guitar shot last night. Cena is just there to put over younger talent these days. I think his days of kicking out of everything are over.

No one can see him.

But seriously, I love John Cena. I don't watch WWE, but every time I see him, whether in movies or interviews, I just can't help but love the guy. He's very intelligent and funny... seems like a genuine, down to earth dude.

As for this movie? Meh, I don't expect anything good either way. A Duke Nukem movie might have been cool back in the mid nineties, when I was a teenager and Duke was a popular character. But, at this time, who the hell is asking for this?

Doesn't Duke Nukem have to be a woman now?

If they're truly going to recapture the essence of the Duke series, they need to take the next decade, punctuated by excited announcements and extended delays, to NOT release anything of actual substance. Then sell off the IP and the product, such as it is at that time, and have it sloppily finished by a third-tier film company that tries to ride Duke into the ground for a few quick bucks.

I agree, and that is exactly why I don't think he fits the role. John Cena seems to be too "Polite". His whole "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect" shtick is completely the opposite of Duke. He's basically type-cast for the people who know him, which rarely works when playing opposing parts. Basically, I think he wouldn't come across as Duke, but rather John Cena playing Duke.

The movie isn't even out yet, and you are already assuming his gender? As long as he identifies as female everything will be fine.

Yeah I really do not know how they are going to make this movie this day and age. Action movies have mode on from the stereotypes of the 80 and early-90s and the type of misogyny that everyone loves Duke for would just not work in today's social climate.

So I really do not see how they can make a movie with Duke being Duke. It is going to have to go Last Action Hero route and just be a total distrack on Duke for it to work.

I don’t think Duke was a “spoof” at all. It is/was way more of a pastiche. That us tinssy, it wasn’t making knowing jokes about the silly ness of those mo it’s. It was very serious about its love for all of its influences. So much so than many things weren’t influences so much as outright theft.

But there’s no point in talking about this because it’s not going to go anywhere.

What's with the picture for this post? I see Duke Nukem on the right and a big blank spot on the left?

If this is as anti-PC as Duke 3d was then this is exactly what the current movie climate needs.

Haha.

The Rock would classify as white in 80% of the world. He is too light.

He's a far better actor than most people give him credit for. Many of these guys are, really.
