Most loved - X360

Most hated (this is going to piss some people off) - PS2/3/4

The X360 controller is comfortable and I love the joystick placement. The d-pad isn't the best but I use it so little that it doesn't bother me.

The PS2/3/4 controllers have, IMO, the worst joystick placement.

The Playstation controller isn't the worst ever made, but it's my personal least favorite.

I always felt that the most comfortable at the time was the GameCube controller but the 360 and Switch Pro come very close in comfort and beat it in general usability for me.

They keep improving every iteration so it was Xbox 360, but now the Xbox One controller is the best. Xbox Elite is even better, but it's not what comes in the box. PS4 stick placement is kinda uncomfortable, but the touch-pad and Share functionality work great.

Best all around controller? The Xbox 360 for Windows. No contest. My personal favorite of all time? MS Sidewinder Precision Pro. NOT the force feedback version because it was extra difficult to repair.

I'd have to say hands down PS4. I've always liked the playstation controllers better than the rest and they've just gotten better and better. If I had to choose a second, I'd have to say Dreamcast.

Shouldn't a keyboard and mouse be up there?

Worst controller: SpaceOrb
Most complicated: Steel Battalion
Most comfortable: Xbox 360
Most useful: K/M
Most durable: NES. I don't know how many times I threw mine against the wall after I would fail on a boss on some game like Kung Fu where I'd have to start a whole level over again and play perfectly to the end.

That said there are some people who have gone all out on Flight and Racing Simulator rigs that we can't even imagine.

I got one in a bundle with a Decent clone called Forsaken. Great game - bad controller. Maybe a little too far ahead of its time.

At one point not too long ago I saw the were still making a series of mice type devices which are great for navigating 3D space for CAD and stuff like that; might even be useful for level design.

Yup.

I have one and its so good.

My second place is the Xbone controller. The D-pad is too clicky though.

Switch controller is good, i need more time with it, its prolly better than the bone controller.

The TG 16 controller was really good, even with its short cord. Its the peak of 2 button NES style controllers imo.

I've got to agree with you. I've never been a fan of the PS2/3 controllers. I haven't spent any time with the PS4 so I'll withhold my judgement there.

The 360 and Switch pro controller s both have poor d-pads which should probably keep them off a list of the best controllers.

THIS, right there! How can you choose a controller that isn't able to compete on the most basic of levels? To this day, I hate using the d-pad on the 360 controller (I use them at my office and home PCs). It's not only about the feel of the thing (which isn't great), but its placement as well. It's why the DS4 is just about perfect for me:

- If I'm playing a 3D game, I'm using both analog sticks (and the shoulder buttons) for the most part. To me, it makes perfect sense that the sticks are aligned horizontally, so neither my left nor right hand are cramped.
- If I'm playing a 2D game, I usually prefer the d-pad and face buttons. Again, they're positioned at the same height. I liked the Wii Pro Controller for the exact same reason, but hated that it neede to be tethered to a Wii Remote.

I can't tell how often I've messed up special moves in fighting games on the Xbox (or PC) because I had to reach "down" to the d-pad with my left thumb, resulting in a diagonal movement. In the end, I think the people preferring the Xbox layout simply like the high position of the left stick (because it's more natural for the thumbs). A controller that prioritized the sticks and put both of them on top would probably be perfect for most modern gamers. Strangely, that design doesn't seem to exist, not even on the Steam controller...

My list would probably go

1. DualShock 4 (overall best, plus interesting functionality with speakers and motion control support)
2. Xbox One controller (best triggers and sticks)
3. SNES controller (the European one, of course)
4. SEGA Saturn Virtua Stick (superb design)
5. NeGcon (the best racing controller I've ever used)

Another contender for worst controller: Logitech Cyberman

http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/d...tech-Cyberman/

I had one kind of worked for doom but not very well and useless for all other games
