Bethesda: Fan criticisms won’t define what we do

VG247 has the story.

Quote:
Bethesda will not let fan complaints and criticisms define what games it works on or releases.

That’s according to PR and marketing dude Pete Hines, who said he’s well aware of a critical fanbase, but won’t let the dissenting voices influence the publisher’s plans with the likes of Skyrim, Fallout and Doom.

“We’re aware of it, but we’re not going to let it define what we do,” Hines said in an interview with GamesRadar.

“Ultimately, we’re going to try and do the things that we think are the best for the games that we’re making, because that’s, honestly, all I can really control.

“I went to Todd [Howard, Skyrim creator] a couple of E3s ago and said ‘everybody’s going to ask us about The Elder Scrolls 6. You have to help me, you have to help me come out and say what the studio’s path is, and when The Elder Scrolls 6 is coming, to try and manage expectations’.”

Duke 3D was a unmitigated disaster that was restarted like 8 billion times and development on half life 3 was never even announced. So...I mean one title that took a long time and didn't work out is what you're going with?

Funny you mentioned HL3 because this attitude he talks about has been Gabe Newell's attitude for the longest time.

That's why I brought up HL3, and when I see this kind of attitude from large devs it frustrates me. So you don't want to do 'X' game anymore, or you're worried the next chapter of 'X' won't meet expectations (which is possible); well be honest and tell us. I know they can't do that either because it would screw the stock price.

I stand by what I first said, and I think Sensei-X gets it.

What is that even supposed to mean? They should ship shit early?

This forum really puzzles me sometimes. You get a studio that says "We're going to do whatever the hell we want" and that's no good. If they did whatever the fans wanted they'd be "derivative".

On the other hand, at least we're consistent. We complain about EVERYTHING.

How excited would I be to work on "3" of anything? Probably not much at all. Suck it bitches.

You're not going to listen to the needs and desires of the customer base that made you the fat cats you are?

Gotta love the brave new world....*lets do objectively the opposite of what our fan base wants and dictate to them we won't listen to their feedback, that would improve our business model!

Ironically the entire bases of your games continued support is by the community, yet you seem to be trying to cut them in half, ironically no one is drinking your koolaid so you're doubling down.

you might have land locked console fans, but you'll never trick PC gamers, we're too salty and have had a life time of free mods, that's like asking me to pay for air.

Oh god I gave them ideas.

They should listen to their customers. Saying you're going to do what you want to do just isn't necessary, morons. Keep that shit to yourself and just nod your head with customer complaints! THEN you do what you want, without rubbing your fans' faces in it.

Why is it that some of the dumbest folks work in PR? Pay me half his salary and I'll do twice the job.

Perhaps because you haven't accomplished much of anything?

Brady, Bradshaw, Montana, and Aikman were pretty happy about working on 'three' and beyond.

Tolkien was pretty stoked about a third book in his trilogy.

Elizabeth Taylor loved three so much she hit it twice and was headed for a third 'three' on husbands, lol.

I have six kids. I hit three twice.

No, I didn't say that. In fact I'm a huge fan of Skyrim because it is a very polished game.

When GTA V was delayed I had no problem with that. I like polished games.

It's the attitude from Bethesda that ticks me off, and every time I've seen a game company get a big head... well shit usually goes south from there.

EA, "Hey, we're going to change the dynamic for Command & Conquer 4!"
Testers, "It's rubbish. stop it."
EA, "But people will love it, it's amazing"
Testers, "It's terrible.

Releases game. Crashes and burns.

EA, "The Next Generals game will be F2P"
Everyone, "We don't want that."
EA, Cancels game.

Studios, at times, just don't like making money.

All I know is that after Fallout 4, I don't expect to be giving Bethesda more money.. And that's after waiting a year and getting it bargain bin.

Pete Hines is sounding more like Interplay's Herve Caen every time he opens his big stupid mouth. Watching the inevitable collapse of Bethesda/Zenimax will be glorious.

Without their Mod community Bethesda would have gone the way of Interplay a decade or more ago.

What's the exact criticism towards Bethesda? I'm having a hard time figuring it out.

The super short version: Bethesda started selling mods in Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Fans balked, because we've had free mods for a long time and now some of them cost money. In turn, Bethesda said they would continue with their current plans, regardless of the complaints or criticism.

I read the interview and that wasn't the issue. Pete Hines is a scumbag but in this case he is right about undeserved backlash they received for not announcing a new game IP, Elder Scrolls 6, or another Fallout at E3 or anywhere throughout 2017. It was a softball interview with nothing about the abysmal Creation Club launch and total dismissal across the board.

I'm a firm believer of the tenet of giving the customer what they want. Once a corporation starts dictating to me what it will or won't do then it's pretty much game over.

Not sure what Hines is whining about, but when you put out complete crap like the new DOOM you might want to start listening to your customer base. Quake Champions is a disaster, the new DOOM is a disaster, Elder Scrolls Online is a disaster, Dishonored 2 was a disaster, the new Wolfenstein looks pretty average and the new Fallout was good but not great... so if they don't want to do another Skyrim exactly what do they have left?
