Steam beta files hint at possible interface overhaul with 'apps,' 'comics,' and 'TV'

TV! TV! TV! TV! TV! TV! TV! TV! PC Gamer has the story.

Quote:
Images found by SteamDB in a sub-folder of the latest Steam client beta, which we've confirmed the presence of after updating our own clients, depict an overhauled Steam design with new sections for apps, comics, TV, movies, and music.

Steam has already dabbled in selling non-game software and movies, as well as soundtracks bundled as DLC, but up till now these categories have played second string to games. The mock-up, which you can see above, integrates them into the main nav where we'd normally see 'Library,' and introduces comics and TV as major new categories.

The inclusion of Halo 5: Guardians in the games list on the left (enlarge the image above to see) speaks to how much of a placeholder this image is. Some of the game icon choices, like the now-defunct Evolve and eight-year-old Mirror's Edge, are also strange, further suggesting this is just an artist's vision. It may not even be a Valve artist's vision, but something an employee downloaded.

The image at the bottom of this article was also found in the client beta with the name SteamU_details_34_nomarkup.png. It looks like a mock-up for a new game page format, though the bit in the middle is an existing page detailing Dota 2's Dark Rift update from last summer. I assume 'SteamU' refers to Steam Universe, a term Valve has used to describe SteamOS and Valve hardware.
Read on.

I look at Steam for games, I look at Barnes and Noble for books.
Why does everyone want to become the be all-end all for media...

Totally agree. I like having these things separated. There's something more clean and efficient about it.

Barnes & Noble exists? I thought Amazon, which sells everything including its original target of books, put them out of business. Huh, look at that--still trucking along a bit. Good for them.

Look for hardware in Steam Store. There should be a drop down menu labeled hardware in the steam store page between software and videos.

they're just normal PCs running steam OS, which is just linux. Steam machines were never really a thing to begin with, but yes the idea is still out there: http://store.steampowered.com/sale/steam_machines

Steam machine is probably a backup plan if MS ever decides to lock-steam out with an MS app market.

Outside of Steam, Valve has never shown the ability to continue a project past concept and release. How many know Steam already sells films and productivity software or that it acts as streaming software and music management? Valve has a history of putting things to the market and letting them die on the vine. If not for Steam's pricing and entrenched marketshare for code activation, Origin would have a real shot of overtaking it.

I own films on steam and software besides games... the music manager sucks balls, wish it was better, I would really like to use it.

They're kind of like Microsoft in that regard.

"Heeey, we debuted the tablet computer way before Steve Jobs did."
"Did you ever do anything with it?"
"We like... told a bunch of people to make our idea a reality so we could make Excel for it."
"So what are you complaining about?!"

"This Windows version is going to unify the household! It can do everything for a desktop and transform for the smallest of handheld devices."
"That's perfect! ...Remove the Start button."
"That will ruin everything and force us to continue to fumble moving out of our dying sector."
"That's perfect!"

Meanwhile... at Valve HQ

"Woah woah woah, I just had a crazy idea! What if... like... Steam were an OS?"
"Woooooah"
"Wooooooooooooah"
"Woooooooooooooooooooooooah"
"And it'll be like Linux based so it doesn't play all Steam games!"
"..."
"..."
"Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooah!"

"Now see here, see, I--Gabe Narwhal--declare that Steam machines shall emerge from all the greatest OEM vendors."
"We love you Gaben, give us a product to sell that doesn't require Microsoft licensing fees."
"And it shall have a state of the art controller designed to play any game in any environment."
"You're so awesome Gabe! We love you and your Steam Machine launch title Half-Life 3!"
"What? What no. How dare you mention that game to me? I am Gabe Narwhal, my parents were murdered by Half-Life 3 and demand it is never spoken of in my presence!"
"Your parents were... what?"
"Just for that NO CONTROLLER! Come back... one year."
"Fuck you I'm Alienware. I'll release my own shitty shitty console."

Do not highlight this post. I called him Gabe Narwharl because he is fat and Narwhals are whales.

I knew the sold things other than just games, but I never used those services primarily because that's not what I use Steam for.

With that being said, the implication of these leaked/found images is that they're making strides toward actually completing a project and taking it past concept and release. I mean, this stuff is already available in the Steam storefront. They're now making it more readily accessible and placing it more front and center. If anyone could succeed at being an all-in-one content provider, it's Valve. They already own the PC gaming market; if they can successfully tap into their massive customer base and convince them to buy-in with this other content, this could potentially be a runaway success.

I'd be willing to bet the biggest reason why they start - and never quite finish - so many projects and initiatives stems from the fact they're privately owned. They're not accountable to anyone but themselves, which gives them the freedom to do whatever they want...but, it also means they can drop things at a moment's notice, no questions asked.
