Call of Duty Returns to its Roots #CallofDuty
IGN is reporting that the Call of Duty franchise will return to its roots of traditional military combat after disappointing sales of the Sci-Fi themed Infinite Warfare. Rumors are that the new title may take place in Vietnam.
Quote:
Activision says this year’s Call of Duty will “take Call of Duty back to its roots.”
In a call reporting fourth quarter 2016 earnings, Activision elaborated that “traditional combat will once again take center stage” in this year’s title, which is currently in development from Sledgehammer Games.
Activision also commented on the lower-than-expected sales of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare last year, noting that the “space setting didn’t resonate” with players, and Infinite Warfare “wasn’t the success we planned.”
Still, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg noted on a call following the earnings report that "we’ve never been more excited creatively or commercially about our three-year Call of Duty slate."

we need a VR mini game where you get to crawl through the tunnels and skewer the little bastards. I honestly can't imagine what that would have been like and I think the VR platform would lend itself to the immersion of the experience.

I watched this show on TV where they traversed a cartel drug smuggling tunnel near Tijuana. The hole was fucking impossibly small. It made me claustrophobic just looking at it.

Until they can make it so you can feel there is barely being enough room for you to shimmy through after you've dropped your gear with just a handgun and no possible way to turn around, it won't be anything like it.

Short of actually going in one, no. Nothing will. But given all the mediums we have right now in this day and age I think VR has the best chance of conveying the experience. And if you made the game play suspenseful so your mind is distracted worrying about what's going to pop out and kill you it'd be easy to immerse the min the visual experience.

People still like the bunny hopping, spastic gameplay in this series? Huh...

After visiting the Củ Chi Tunnels last year, where I shoved Doctor Girlfriend in a hole, I can honestly say I have no desire to crawl through a mud tunnel thinner than my hip bones, littered with bamboo spike traps.

Is there also a place in Halong Bay where I can shove Doctor Girlfriend in a hole?

So first they tried to catch up to Titanfall with 2 titles that introduced verticality into the level design... that failed.
Then they saw EA has a thing where they are going back to the past and that was successful... so let's do that now? But different past, because we don't want to look unoriginal....

Maybe I'm just mistaking my own desires for something that would be a big hit but I don't see why they don't go back to the modern warfare setting but on a smaller and more realistic scale. The campaign doesn't have to be about saving the world from a grand epic disaster. Even what some might consider simple stories of missions from real life soldiers often make for some very interesting tales. Make it smaller and more realistic in scale but keep the combat as fast and intense as always.
As for the multiplayer, I absolutely loved the maps from MW2. They felt unique from each other and gave a good amount of thematic variety. Starting with MW3, the maps seemed much more tied to the theme of crumbled cities that the single player story covered. I want that variety back and don't tie the maps to the campaign. Just make some great looking, varied, and balanced maps. Keep it simple and thematically realistic and I'll sign back up.

Well, when I was there I wasn't yet a doctor myself, nor did I have a doctor girlfriend, so...I don't know.
It was, however, a helluva place to bring in a New Year. Just beautiful. One of the highlights of my years spent living in Asia.
