Do yourself a favor and if you haven't played Star Control II: The Ur Quan Masters, do so

I absolutely loved Star Control I and II. I even bought my first Sound Blaster to hear that amazing Star Control II soundtrack and boy did it sound freaking awesome compared to the PC speaker that most people had back then. Star Control III on the other hand was which was terrible.

This does not look promising, but I'll hold off my opinion until I play it first hand.

Here is a Postmortem of the original Star Control

I've played the first few hours; so far, it's pretty close to the same playbook as Star Control 2. Honestly, maybe a little too closely. I don't want to go into spoilers, but the early plot steps are nearly carbon-copied from SC2, with names changed and some personality tweaks.

Not to say that everything is identical; although planet scanning is pretty much the same (scan the planet, verify you can safely land and survive based on the scan results), the lander is quite a bit different. Gameplay-wise, it feels like a condensed version of planet exploration from Mass Effect 1. As in, you bumble around on the surface, fighting the physics, picking up minerals, tech, and occasionally shooting at aliens -- very much like ME1 Mako (or maybe more like ME2's Hammerhead), but about 50x faster. You can finish up a planet in a couple minutes, tops, and move on to the next.

So far, voice-acting has been pretty good. The evil baddies sound ominous, the comic-relief aliens sound like Dr. Zoidberg, etc. And in a nice departure from SC2, there seems to be more than one ship-type per race. I've also stumbled onto a few aliens (I think of them as minor NPCs) without the full-blown animated comm-screens. Still well voice-acted, though.

But yeah, at this point, the experience is definitely reminding me of SC2, down to trying to guess what type of planet I'm approaching (before orbiting) by the color/texture, and judging whether they're worth landing on for the minerals present. Haven't really progressed the story much, so can't say if it'll blow your socks off. I'm hopeful though.
