Weekend Headbanger - What are you listening to? #Kreator #Overkill

I have been listening to Kreator's latest album, Gods of Violence. I have also been cranking the new one from Overkill, The Grinding Wheel, which kicks complete and total ass (Jersey Represent)!

What have you been listening to?

I want to know how these old fart bands still have the energy and stamina to play their ultra fast and aggressive songs. I can see 20 somethings doing it with ease, but these guys must all be pushing 50 by now.

Their fingers stay nimble because they keep playing. The thing that can end an older guys playing days fast arthritis.

They guys in Overkill stay in shape. The vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth still has a washboard stomach.

Old guys likes Ozzy hit the gym before they go on tour. Look at Mick Jagger, he is still in great shape.

At 50 I have a lot more energy than I did at 45, because I went on a diet and I exercise more now.

If only the 20-somethings would want to do something like this. Granted, that generation has produced some great music. But metal is a genre that has gone largely ignored in recent years. While I love music in nearly all genres, I'm waiting for the cyclical nature of the industry to spark a metal resurgence so we can see what this generation can do with it when they really let their creative juices flow. Just please no more of the death growl garbage!

It certainly hasn't gone ignored; Metal is still very much alive. It is, however, a very troubled genre for two reasons.

First and foremost, it's a stagnant genre, largely due to the fact that anything that isn't immediately recognized as "Metal" is vehemently rejected by the fanbase. Everything is just an iteration of an iteration of something based on one of the big bands. It's all becoming far too samey.

Secondly, there aren't any mega-bands like the Big Four - or even more recent acts like Slipknot - on the horizon to captivate new and old audiences while injecting life into the genre again.

There's plenty of Metal out there, but it's all basically the same shit.
