Valve President Gabe Newell Ranked In The Top 100 Richest People In America

Game Informer has the story.

Quote:
It is no secret that Valve makes bank, but now the man at the top of that cash tower can now say there are only 96 people in the country richer than him.

Forbes released a list of the one hundred richest people in the country rounded to the nearest hundred million, which is a marginal round off that is more money than most people will ever get the chance to even imagine. In the revised list, Valve's head of state has been crowned the 97th richest person in America, due to Valve's immense popularity with its storefront and hat retailer.

Forbes estimates Newell's worth at $55 billion.
Note: There is a typo in Game Informer's article. Gabe Newell's worth is estimated at $5.5 billion. (Thanks, ZAX!)

Pretty much this. You fat prick, Gabe. With all the money you've made you could at least throw your fans a bone.... you know, from that big, smelly, fat pile you obviously rarely leave alone.

Do people seriously still want Half-Life 3? It will never live up to the hype, so just let it die.

It didn't just help Steam succeed. It MADE Steam.

I'll give the guy credit for one thing, more so than even creating HL. He knew how frigging anticipated HL2 was, and in a stroke of brilliance, told everyone that if they wanna play it they'd have to sign up for a brand new game service.

Everyone posed and moaned, but launching Steam with CS:Source eased the burden in the minds of gamers.

Once he saw gamers had capitulated he had to have known how much money he'd make once he got other publishers to sign up.

It was a stroke of genius not unlike that of Bill Gates' licensing model for Windows.

And after a decade, and 45 billion mother flipping dollars, he won't release part 3.

It burns. I literally do not like this guy and haven't bought a game off Steam in a year.

When HL3 is out, I will.

I wish others would do the same.

5.5B, fix the typo. Still a lot of money, but there's no way the 97th richest person in the US is worth 55B!

Yeah well it might've helped if HL2: Episode 2 didn't end in a goddamn cliffhanger.

You started a HL3 inspired boycott of Steam in 2016? LOL. You're a bit late.

I stopped caring about - let alone wanting - Half-Life 3 years ago. The HL2 showed me they probably weren't entirely sure where to take the story and the Episodes solidified the fact that they really don't know where to take the story.

At the end of the day, HL3 would never live up to any of it's expectations. It would be disappointing, no matter how good it ended up being. We're never going to get it...and that's okay.

We're better off without it.

While that might be true, I'd have a hard time believing Gabe would NOT want to do the same thing he did with HL2.

If he could "force" users into a new platform or technology, by essentially tying HL3 to it (VR?) and he thought he could make a lot of money on it, he would.

No way he's going to let the anticipation for HL3, if it were announced, to go to waste.

He already pulled it once with HL2 and Steam. Why not again?

As I've always argued, a rich man with a private company not beholden to investors equals LAZY. And considering most the staff a millionaires too, they are also lazy. Forget HL3, they can't even add optional sounds for Steam achievements even though we've been asking for well over a decade. Something actually has a mod to hack Steam and add them in.

He had a chance with the Steam Machines 'JOKE'. HL3 appearing on that platform alone may have helped. What didn't help is the oems putting silly prices to what was basically a damn PC.

I honestly don't care if they never make Half Life 3 and conclude the silly cliffhanger story they left in Half Life 2. Gameplay aside (it's still really fun), the supporting characters and Gordon Freeman as the messiah narrative hasn't aged well and it's a bit cringey in retrospect. The original is a timeless gem and I'd prefer Valve make a new IP with a more straightforward storyline and none of the "epic" bullshit.

Steam Achievements turned 10 years old on October 9th. You probably haven't been asking for this for over a decade.
