This is what Source Film maker can do...

I can't wait to play with this. Here's a perfect example of what competent fans are able to do with this tool. I'm hoping I can do some stuff with Left 4 Dead. I've got some concepts that have been banging around in my head for years.

Downloading it as I write this... CAN NOT WAIT!

Anyhoo, enjoy the vid!

Ah. I've seen people import Alex's model into TF2. Anyhoo, I can not wait until or if, they get this running for their other games!

Um... competent film makers? Are you joking? It's just models frozen in the middle of animation routines with the camera slowly panning through them. I found it so immediatly boring that I had to click forward in the scrubber just to find out that that's it. No reveal or twist or anyhing approaching a reason for the clip to exist.

It's about as "competent" as rendering a teapot in 3d Studio Max...

While I'm not going to say this was mind blowing, the poignancy was in the situations. The Sniper and the Engineer yukking it up and then the panning camera revealing the Engineer to be holding a butterfly knife (meaning he's an enemy spy about to murder the shit out of his "chum") stands out for me.

My thoughts as well. Actual animation would be more impressive.

The comments on that video are ridiculous. How did this gain so much popularity?

hmm.. that was a big letdown.
Cool situations + looooooong panning = Zzzz

It's a MOVIE maker, not a sculpture panning tool.

Haha. No shit. Well, it's free, so we'll see what the community here does. My guess is nothing.

panning around stills? I think other tools can do this also.

well, I honestly think the title of the thread riled me up more than the actual video.

The video WAS boring, in my opinion, and I think the pans were unnecessarily drawn out to add length to the video, as is the case with most amature animators. But, if the guy just put it online with no fanfare and said this is what I did... then okay. Good start. You're off and running. Now make something interesting.

But if he was fishing for compliments... well, sorry. I don't feel like that video is any more interesting than Photoshop 101 Assignment 1 classes where kids take a picture of themselves and use a bunch of filters on it and say "look what I made".

It was awfully low hanging fruit. But that's a good thing, complexity will come with familiarity.

Agreed. I thought it was pretty awesome. They managed to tell a story without animations. I suspect as they grow confident with the editor that we will see some great stuff from this team.
