Reminds me of both The Forbidden Kingdom and the new Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. All of them are based on the same Chinese novel I think. Love this style of cinema, can't wait.

Same story. It's been told a thousand times.

Monkey was one such version, which lots of people know because it was translated by the BBC.

If a story requires it's own Wikipedia article in order to properly catalogue the numerous times it's been retold through practically every media format available...it's probably been done a few too many times.

I love the story. I really do. I'm just getting pretty sick of it being re-re-re-re-re-re-re-reimagined every couple years or so.

Sometimes I wish I knew from the title if the trailer is for movies or games, 'cause I rarely care about movie trailers.

I'm not sure about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but almost every single Chinese "ancient epic struggle" movie is either based off of Journey to the West or Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. Seriously, it's like that country has no other literature on which to base this stuff on, and they can't just some up with something totally new. I get it, those works are super important for your history, but geez nobody wants to see this shit anymore.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that.

Wow this looks like a dolt sat down and thought, "What's the stupidest new design we could make for a Chinese pseudo martial arts movie?"
And then said dolt got hammered and came up with this.
It's like, "Drunken Stupidity"

They actually do have history, but they live in a culture that is both highly authoritarian and has honoring your forefathers as a central tenant. Here's an extremely brief history of China:

Until 1840, they were a feudal society that focused on trading. They sometimes suffered attacks from raiding Mongols to the north, but they built the Great Wall of China to prevent these. They are known for creating (among other things) paper and gunpowder. Additionally, they held on to the secrets of creating silk for centuries which greatly increased trade. Anyway, this is supposed to be short. . . sorry. I'm condensing a TON. But in 1840, they were invaded by the British during the Opium War and were forced to become something like a colony.

In 1911, the bourgeois democratic revolution (the Xinhai Revolution) led by Sun Yat-sen abolished the feudal monarchy, and established the Republic of China, therefore starting the modern history of China.

After being brutally invaded by the Japanese during World War II the Chinese Communist Party came to power (1949) and continues to be in power today (thus the heavy authoritarian government).

There is a ton of history to be talked about, but the problem is access. The Communist government does not want people making movies that mention the democratic government they overthrew because they are worried that it would be popular and lead to riot or protests from their heavily controlled populace. They also don't want films made about the state of the country today because it would expose the suffering and lack of freedom of the people within the country.

So the only "safe" history that they can't get government approval for and access is ancient China.
