AGE OF EMPIRES Developer Interview (1999) - Behind the Scenes making of the PC Classi

Classic 1999 interview with Ensemble Studios the developer of the Age of Empires series.

What other real-time strategy games did you play? Homeworld? Command & Conquer? Dune II?

Me and my buddy P2P'd this game so much. He was the smarter, patient type, i was the quicker on the kb, zerg rush type. It made for some fun matches.

That said, im not going to listen to this. I want to keep the mystery alive. It really was a special game.

Age of Empires sure was great.

I probably played Warcraft3 most, because of the great variety of custom fun maps and the cool online multiplayer at the time.

Another game I played a lot was Natural Selection, which was a mod to Halflife1.

It was a hybrid of RTS and FPS, in which one player in each team was the commander who overviewed the map in RTS perspective, and the rest played it as FPS.
It had strategic resource extraction points to capture, base building, upgrade research and weapons development, etc. The theme was space marines versus slimy aliens. Sides playing very different.
It's some of my fondest gaming memories, some real epic matches.

The same mod team later went on to make a stand alone version with AAA production quality.
The development of that was fun to follow. was quite a struggle too.
They've continuously updated the game ever since.

Sorry for stretching the definition of RTS with this FPS stuff, but it really was a cool experience.

I probably put more time in Warcraft 2 and later Starcraft than any other RTS game. There was this really obscure one I loved back then called Enemy Nations. It was a batshit insane combo of Sid Meire's Alpha Centauri, Command and Conquer, and Sim City.

AOE2 and Starcraft were when I finally "got" RTS games. Not that I was any good at them, but I loved the lore of Starcraft and the variety and endless ways to experiment in AOK. Both of these games, I believe, are in the top 5 of best games ever made.

I'm not much for RTS games these days, but that wasn't always the case. I cut my teeth on games like Dune II, Warcraft, and Command & Conquer, then later Total Annihilation became a LAN-party mainstay. I really enjoyed Age of Empires too, but I may be in the minority when I say I definitely preferred Age of Mythology... probably have more hours logged in that than any other RTS.

I've got to mention Activision's 1998 reboot of Battlezone. For me, at the time, it was the perfect blend of FPS and RTS. Despite some bugs, we really enjoyed that at our LAN parties as well. I'm not sure if it's considered an RTS, but I'll always have a soft spot for Bungie's Myth: The Fallen Lords. I'd love to see them bring that one back.

No love for KKND? I quite liked that one. Not that it was the top of the list mind you, I just never see anyone mention it heh.

Age of Empires series is the ONLY game where I saw the sun come up. I had some incredible multiplayer games. Looking back, its hard to believe with internet speeds, modems, etc.

Much like Meeks, I cut my teeth on Dune 2 and never looked back for several years.

I remember a game called Warwind, that I picked up at a store and was utterly disappointed with. That might have been when my love for RTS started declining... and when I learned not to buy games based on pretty boxes.

These days I'm too impatient for RTS games. I tried Starcraft 2 but never got into it. Same with Company of Heroes.

I can spend forever grinding out stuff in RPGs though - currently in the remastered Bard's Tale, which is sooo simple, but the gameplay is right for me.

Age of Mythology was the shit. I loved playing LAN parties with the big circular map. You'd be trying to crush the neighbor to your left while defending against the guys to your right. Awesome fun.
