Amazon Kindle... Now with SPAM!

Amazon.com has announced a new version of the popular Kindle eBook reader, this one cutting the price by $25 and including SPAM advertising on the Kindle home screen and during the screensaver.

I suggest you wait till Christmas when they lower the price of the WiFi Kindle by the same $25 and you can get the one without the free SPAM. Unless you like that lovely SPAM.

Would now be the time to mention I have a short story up on the Kindle?

(And a novel coming June 1st.)

The question is how often the "special offers" shoot out, and what value they offer. If I knew that there'd be a half-off $20 amazon gift card offer pushed each month, I'd be all over this. The family reads that much and then some in ebooks each month.

Problem is...that won't be the case. Good offers will be few and far between, so thanks but no thanks.

Before that commercials. I really tend to tune that stuff out. But $25 price drop? That doesn't sound like enough. $35 more likely, $50 definitely.

Remember Minority Report when he goes near a store with the eye scanner and it pitches him stuff because of what the previous owner bought. We are about 3mm away from that reality.(Probably the borrowed eyes too)

Anyway, if you buy the ad supported version you do know what you are getting.

Plus they are saying that it only uses the screensaver and menus to sell you stuff. Nothing inside a book. So its no big deal at the moment.

Honestly, ad supported this thing should be free. They know you are going to use it to buy books... why not get the ad version into your hands for free?

Judging from they're saying, the ads wouldn't be terribly obnoxious. But I agree with Evil, give the damn thing away for free. $25 off? No thank you. Free? Absolutely.

It's little more than testing the waters. And also a disturbing trend -_-

Exactly! If Amazon wants to dominate the market that's the way to do it. This half-assed move won't cut it.

I'd be okay with a $25 discount for ignoring their ads, but the price is still a bit too high for me. I have plenty of bookshelf space and won't be moving anytime soon, so dead tree books make more sense right now.

It's on the home screen, where you're doing nothing, and the screen saver, also where you're doing nothing. While $25.00 isn't a whole lot for some people pushing it close to the magical $100 mark is going to be all the difference in the world.

If I were them I think I would probably have tried to get it down a hair more (it's $114 right now), even to something like a round number of 110 or better yet the previously mentioned magic number of 99.99. But this still should move some units.

I had better get the damn thing for next to nothing if they want to send me spam on a regular basis. Why the hell should they keep getting paid when I have to pay for the privilege of it?

Decent idea but $25 isn't enough off. Push it to below $100. That enters the real of impulse buy for many shoppers.

One of the things I see happening is that Amazon wants to push the Kindle below the $100 mark and this is the way to do it. They launch it at $114 now and then after they have sold a bunch of units at that price they can drop it to $99 in early November right before Black Friday and have a $99 eBook reader out there for Christmas.

Even so, I don't think I would spring for it. Spend the $200 and get the one with the free 3G so you can order a new book any time you want from anywhere.
