Return of the Commodore 64

While it is technically a PC in a retro case, Commodore USA is promising a new Commodore OS and the ability to also boot into the Classic OS to play all those old C64 games.

Quote:
It's back... and better than ever! The new Commodore 64 is a modern functional PC as close to the original in design as humanly possible. It houses a modern mini-ITX PC motherboard featuring a Dual Core 525 Atom processor and the latest nVidia ION2 graphics chipset. It comes in the original taupe brown/beige color, with other colors to follow.

That's pretty nice I guess. I was sure they'd manage to put out the Amiga clones before this came around though.

Hardware-wise, it's actually a decent little machine. I'd be tempted to pick one up, primarily for novelty's sake.

I don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with the C64 when the followup Amiga was SO much more amazing.

For me it was my very first computer. I feel the same nostalgia for the Atari 2600 even though the 7800 was 'better'.

That should provide about 20 minutes of fun before the nostalgia wears off.

This is a sweet piece of kit that I'm very tempted to pick up.

You've apparently never played Mail Order Monsters, Archon, Space Rogue, Modem Wars, or any of a thousand+ other unbelievably fun titles for the C64. Despite the graphics limitations of the device, several of the games hold up remarkably well by modern standards, particularly with regard to story and depth. (See: Wasteland.)

I think Gateway still owns the rights to all the old Amiga HW. So there probably won't be a real clone until these guys get some more capital and finish the development of Commodore OS 1.0. They do have some systems planned with names like A500x A2000x A3000x but the screenshots they have on the site only show empty cases atm.

Oh MoM is fantastic. It was years later after my C64 died that I played another fantastic game by Paul Reiche III called: Star Control 1 & 2.

How can you not mention Shadow of the Beast for the Amiga. Everyone who understands this will understand. I remember being BLOWN away with the scrolling in this game if you know what I mean!

OH HELL YES. One of my favorite games of all time to this day. You really don't see similar games for some reason. I think it is STILL ahead of its time.

Shadow of the Beast is like Altered Beast. How is it ahead of anything?

You mean it had just decent parallax scrolling?

Ahead of its time? The gameplay seems awfully dated. What exactly is 'ahead of its time'?

I am lucky enough to still own 2 working amiga models : the amiga 600 and amiga 1200, also owning the original boxed shadow of the beast 1 & 2 games (still hunting the 3rd one).
An ongoing project of mine is the upgrade of my Amiga 1200 to a more "up to date" levels (see surfing the internet, reading emails, playing mp3's etc). I am 80% there :-)
